All Treasure Hunting
My family and I are novice treasure hunters but we would like to learn as much as possible. We have purchased a decent detector (not a toy, but not a $2000 machine either) and we are looking for additional tools.

We would like a GPS unit to help mark places we have searched, see where we left off, etc. We hunt with our 9 year old son and would like him to learn navigation skills with this. For those of you who use them, what do you like best? Handheld? Tablet? Watch? Apps?

Second, we are also looking for a collapsible shovel we can take on the hunt. Would love recommendations for those.

Other than obvious things (water, survival kits, etc) what else would be useful on hunts we need to hike into?

We aren't looking to get rich, but we are serious about spending time with each other and hoping to find some interesting things.

Thanks in advance!

My wife is a Geocacher and she used a Garmin Handheld GPS made for woods and trails because a car GPS only knows roads. She has marked places for me that I thought has potential to Detect of bottle dig. Know she uses her I-Phone GPS but she said it is a pain to mark a site with. I just use a regular shovel that is about 3 foot tall for woods detecting. Supplies you would need depend on how far you are going and how long you will be on foot for. Try doing online research for places to go, you can even use Google Earth to find old foundations and clearings if there are no forest in the picture to deal with. Maybe you can luck out and park close to your sites and not have to walk so far. Good luck with your hunts and keep us posted on finds with pictures.

You might like to try Tect O Trak. It does everything you want and more.. I can't say how educational it will be other than making your son familiar with maps and geography. The database can also be exported and viewed in Google Earth, which also has some educational potential.
