I'm trying to share information relevant to the GPZ 8000 having a limited response to so called "sunbakers" and the reason as recognized and expressed by the inventor. The small, micro-volt, fast response signal from a small gold nugget in the period of time when hundreds of volts of noise from decay of CEMF dominates, results in no intelligent demodulation of signal.

This is an issue with every single PI detector all the way back to Elsec. The problem stated (post 14) was that the 8k could not see a "0.3" (gram, I assume) nugget that every other model screamed on. Some possibilities are:

• The user was not running the 8k appropriately
• The 8k has a software bug
• The 8k cannot detect a 0.3g nugget or anything smaller
• The 8k has an electronic target hole at that particular tau
• The IB coil has a balance null at/near the surface

Now that a number of 8ks are being used, has anyone reported on what minimum target it can detect?

No, and I don’t think you will hear any reports till the smaller coil is out…. A conspiracy theorist would say that’s why they’re making everyone buy the unit with a large coil now and delaying the release of the smaller coil, cus only then will the world realize how badly it does on small gold and they want to sell as many as they can before that happens…. Till then, you’ll hear all the YouTube non influencers and Detect(not)experts (as Minelab calls them as they gut decades of knowledge on the Treasure Talk section of their web site and replace it with their photos) saying, relax, wait till the smaller coil is out, that’s the only way to know…. Then when everyone realizes it, they’ll do the same as they did the 7000, drop the price several thousand and/or do a package tossing in a Gold Monster or SDC, BS’ing that it’s the perfect “fly poop to retirement size nugget range” detector package) like they again, did with the 7000… people will forget about the fact the that they’re being gaslit and will line up at the paddock gate, in the mean time those who already purchased one will be wondering “where the hell’s my small gold add on detector, and Minelab will offer a partial refund or discount on the GM or SDC, like they again, did when they screwed us on the pricing of the GPZ19 35% deeper coil”

If yaz been around Minelab long enough, ya lurnz their business model. 😉

The ML engineer at Wedderburn said that the 13 had a design issue that had to be corrected before it could be released. I assume it involves a change to an injected-molded part. In any case, even the big coil should be able to edge-detect small nuggets, I just wonder how small. 0.3g seems like a big small.

Test it:

It.s a 1.8 mm cube... a "picker" (calculation available on request).
The resistivity of gold is 2.44 x 10 exp -8 ohms x meters; the resistance of a 1.8 mm diameter gold wire is approximately 0.0096 ohm per meter of length.

A 2 mm length wire/nugget has a Resistance of 0.0096 x (2/1000) = 19.2 micro-ohms.

In testing, ask, are you certain?
In a prior lifetime, (50 years ago) I worked for Halliburton, an oil services company in their design, testing and calibration facility, calibrating Induction (resistivity) logging tools. They used single turn loops with a series cal resistance to simulate "the eddy current response"of oil in oil wells! Fast forward, I make calibration loops (nugget simulators) for calibration of metal detectors. I calibrate every loop.

Ask me what my primary cal standard is.

After getting washed off East beach at Nome late one night in 2008, I hauled my gear, canvas tent, pump, hoses, and Proline combo high-banker up the sea wall and stored it. I moved my op to the interior in 2009. I landed in McGrath with all of my toys. I met a retired ADFG officer with the initials KP. He had just returned from Steves' pay to mine at Moore Creek with a big smile on his face. After introductions, he told me he was detecting at Moore Creek and decided to check out a hole where someone apparently found a nugget and ran off doing the happy dance. His 4500 as I recall lit up and he pulled out a 30 ounce Gold nugget! He reached in his pocket and revealed his prize. It fit nicely in the palm of my hand.

Cool post…. Thanks for sharing.. I have one of Prolines motor pump combos (HP500, same combo I think your high banker dredge combo used) for my high banker that has modified clarkson riffles which require high flow, Proline makes some great stuff. It’s a travesty they don’t have a bigger customer bases they deserve to be as well known as Keene.

Damn they’re pretty when they first come out of the box.. lol

I fed the hopper on the Proline Combo with a #2 True Temper shovel. I could shovel one cubic yard a day! Almost all of the gold dropped on the rubber v-mat under the grizzly.

Then, I sold a silver mine in AZ. Money, money, money rolled in. I designed and fabricated three wash plants using 2" Unistrut and .125 Diamond plate aluminum in 4 ft x 4 ft x 8 ft frames that could run 50 Yards per hour. They were called Maxi bankers. Assembly requied two 1/2" combination end wrenches. Each had a 3 foot wide sluice, 16 feet long with expanded metal screen over Astro-Turf and a nugget trap. I ran two maxi bankers side-by-side giving a 6 foot wide hopper with wings on both sides of the hopper. Each plant had a Keene 600 gpm pump driven by Vanguard V-twin 23 hp motors. I fed them with two Bobcat loaders with 1 yard (heaping) buckets.

very heavy detector. if its super cheap i guess but you can get a Garrett axiom lite from garrett direct right now for $1599 with the new sale code they have going. the Axiom is miles ahead in performance and light weight. If you plan on hunting gold its the best bang for the buck in a PI

Boat anchor heavy compared to new designs.
Given the technology is getting over a decade old, it would have to be cheap.
Then again if they were good....

@minerjosh gave you the perfect answer,,, as much as I’m a die hard Minelab user and own several of them, I also own an Axiom and it is a fantastic machine to dip your toe in the water to determine if this hobby is for you. On top of the performance improvements over the ATX, it’s going to hold its resale value a lot better than the ATX should you determine it’s not (the hobby for you). The instant discrimination at the push of a button (provided you have the correct type coil on it) can’t be beat…. I use to have a Garrett Infinium (similar age of technology) and there is no comparison. Buy the Axiom lite and you won’t regret it, great advice Josh!

In my opinion a 5 or 6 grain picker isn’t a “sun baker” regardless of it being on the surface. When I think Sun Baker, I imagine large Australia gold that has been tanning on top of a reef for who knows how long.

Most nugget hunters I know have several detectors. PI AND VLF. Jack of all trades is a master of none.

Very slick, they look like huge beach boxes, very cool….. this HP500 was purchased for use on the Heckler Fabrication multi stage (over under fine gold below) 10x10 and I use a Hydro Force on it as well. I also have a Heckler trommel, he (Greg) makes good stuff.

The gold's been there millions of years, as has the Province, it'll be there when you go back. I sold all my claims in BC when I left except one that is my retirement claim. A huge inside corner bench, known producer with an old wash plant waiting for the day I return and show it the love she deserves. I use to have a Heathkit HW-202, they had fun stuff, it was a real loss when they shut down. Were you on Larry's GPEX forum?

Im also a minelab user. I Didnt get rid of my 4500...well this 4500 is my second one i bought it used for an oz of nuggets when gold was at $2200. ive had a 5000 also and equinox 800 and 900. The Axiom is my first Garrett and I am not disappointed to say the least. I have found plenty of AU with it. Even in patches I cleaned out with the 4500. The Axiom hits smaller gold better and is better at specimen type gold. As Jennifer said the iron check with the DD focused core coil is awesome. I use it all the time and it hasnt grunted on gold yet for me but i have found small iron that didnt grunt. Maybe not perfect but it is a big leap in discrimination in a PI. I use the DD focus core coil exclusively in my area. I have some pretty hot ground the mono coil does not like at all but the DD can run full blast and its goood

My first detector was also a Heathkit design. My dad built it for me back about
1968/1969. Worked good, too, and I found a boatload of nails with it...

To you old time gold detectorists, this may be considered as "small", but I'd

I really like the over and under! My Keene Mini 8 dredge had over and under decks. That's what made me pull the trigger to buy. You mentioned the Clarkson modified riffles earlier. I presume Hungarian riffles. I recommend Randy's thesis "The Clarkson Report" to anyone in the biz. of placer mining. Back to the over-under concept, I also recommend viewing the video(s) on the RMS Ross Box.
