:occasion14: Couple of weeks ago went on a bank run. Stopped at 1 bank & teller said she had $15 loose halfs. While she was counting them out, I heard the distinct sound of silver. She than asked me the dreaded question "Do you have a account here?". I told her the truth that I didn't have a account & I'm a coin collector. She said she couldn't sell me the coins. After 15 minutes & a new $20 checking account later, she than was able to sell me the coins. The other tellers had a additional $2 in loose halfs. As she counted the $15 in halfs again, I noticed a weird reverse on 1 of the coins. Included in the halfs were 4 40%s & 1 90% (64 Ken). The best was yet to come. The coin with the weird reverse was a 1824 Capped Bust Lettered Rim half dollar!! I took it to several dealers & they all said it is authentic & is in very fine condition. However it has been cleaned which reduces it's coin collecting value but I don't care as it is now the oldest coin I have found crh & in my collection. Photos are attached.

What an incredible find! Out of curiosity, how do you know the coin has been cleaned?

Wow!!####!!!!!!

Congrats on an epic find! Just incredible, well worth another bank account.

The surface has marks on it resembling cleaning, the up and down motion probably by something metal or very hard.

Fantastic find, Gary!!! That is truly a once in a lifetime find! Cleaned or not, who else can say that they got a 190-year-old coin from the bank!!! Heck, my oldest find is only 136 years old. Thanks for sharing :D

Amazing condition once in a lifetime 190 year old find is right. Btw Buff, I didn't do the math on my oldest crhing find till I read your post but my oldest crhing finds are 136 years old too - two 1878 Morgans (one P and one S) that I found a few years ago the same time I found the Morgan in my avatar. I don't remember but yours Im guessing is an 1878 seated, or foreign coin of some kind?

Now that's how it's done, sweet score and grats!

"Teller Finally Let Me Touch her Bust after I opened a $20 Account" ?

Great find! And she just counted it out to you TWICE with a straight face, as if she buys and sells 1824 halves everyday at her branch? Nice.

:laughing7: Some banks have policies that the tellers aren't able to buy coins from their trays. Maybe this bank was 1 of them. I know if it was me, I would have been on the phone to get someone to buy the coin for me. Also she was a little older & maybe she wasn't knowledgeable about coins. I didn't catch it the 1st time she counted out the coins also; so maybe it was just dump luck. Anyway I was at the right place at the right time.

:coffee2: After I got the coin because of its age & condition, I thought it was too good to be true. I tested it with a magnet & the magnet didn't stick. I brought it to a coin auction with a friend of mine & showed it to serveral dealers there. They all said it was authentic & had been cleaned. 1 of them still offered me $100 for it but of course I turned it down. I wanted this baby for my collection. I than took it to the coin dealer who speaks regularly at my md club meetings. He also told me it was authenic & that it had been cleaned. I was just at the right place at the right time to get the coin.
