Any tips on where to pan for gold near Texas, or what type of detector would be a good start for noobies?

Welcome from the Alamo City. Llano River produced a little gold and Sandy Creek(south of Llano, Texas) has some powder gold. Flakes and small nuggets in the Llano near Llano too. Just hit and miss...

Welcome from Spring, TX! As others have said, LLano is the main spot for small gold in Texas. The Garrett AT Gold is a great unit for detecting small / sub gram gold, just don't take it near saltwater.
