I’m getting some gunstock blanks ready to take to a gun show this October. These were all milled between 2013 and 2018. They are dry now and ready to sell.

Warsaw, Missouri used to be the gunstock capital of the world. Nowadays, about all they can turn out is laminates. Fact is, a decent quality stock made with beryl walnut will fetch $2,500 if not more. It is to the point stocks of fine firearms are worth more than the action itself.

Looks awesome, I'm lucky if I can draw a squiggly line on a piece of wood and somewhat follow it with a saw.

You’re close. It’s cherry. I got two blanks out of a cherry crotch I found. This is the other blank along with a piece of Turkish walnut. Cherry is far less common here than walnut. Walnut is everywhere near my house.

I’ve been to Warsaw several times. It was like going to Mecca for me. Bishop and Fajen were the stock makers when I started in 1980. They’re both gone but there are still two stock companies there. Macon Gunstocks and Wenig Wood. I’m pricing mine to sell. $100 for a two-piece and $150 for a rifle blank. I’ve restocked every long gun I own and these are extras I’ll never use. Time to move them on.

As some know, I grew up in a Sporting Goods store in Kansas City. When I turned 16, I was presented with a brand-new (for me at least) 22-250 built upon a WWII FN Mauser action. The gunsmith was Jim Curry, and the stock was done by Rhinehart Fajen. I have no idea what my dad paid to have it made at the time. I shot that rifle enough I replaced the barrel five times! When I replaced the rifle , the barreled action alone was close to $1,200. I used a McMillan laminate stock. I still miss the original.

That's some real nice looking wood Gary. Is it 10/4 sawn or is there thicker pieces?

Cherry is more common than walnut in these parts for milling it seems.

When I set my mill I try to go for 11/4. That will give a blank thick enough for a cheek piece. 10/4 will work fine for most stocks. 9/4 is absolute minimum before you start running into problems.
