:o i really don't know what topic to put this on but i don't think it matters. yesterday i called in sick and decided to go around and do some research on some spots in the outskirts of town. i stopped by this old ranch house i have been eyeballing for the last couple of weeks and decided to go ask the owner if i could hunt his property. not a good idea. i went up knocked on the door and an older gentleman probably in his late 70's to early 80's opened the door. i politely introduced myself and told him why i was there. i asked if i could metal detect on his property and with a perplexed face didn't know what i was talking about so i figured i would just show him i started to walk back to my car to take out my Garrett to show him and by the time i turned around the old man was standing there pointing what looked like a 308 at me and yelling obscenities at me telling me to get the f+++ off his property. after almost soiling myself i asked him calmly to put the gun down so i could leave then he just started waiving the rifle around and yelling i don't want what you are selling and get off my property!!! i jumped in my car and tore out of there like a bat out of hell and called the police. dispatch asked if i could wait at the end of the road until the sheriff arrived so i could give him my side of the story. the officer went down the road to talk to the old man and was gone for about 20 minutes in the mean time another deputy arrived to get a statement from me. the other sheriff came back and explained to me what happened. apparently this old guy lives by himself and is almost 80 years old very senile and probably off his meds, he thought i was trying to sell him my metal Detector. ::) and he swore to the police he told me to leave before he had pulled his rifle out on me. anyway long story short, scared the sh#t out of me and now has me scared to knock on anyones door anymore. just thought i would share my day with everyone. that will teach me to call in sick from work. :-\

Wow what a close call.
Better hope your boss dosen't take up detecting and find this story.
LOL ;) ;D

Man, now that's what I would call a bad experience! I guess you took that as a no for permission!
Still in some ways I feel sorry for the old guy. Even if he is a slap crazy, demented, anti social, disfunctional, loose canon son of a ______! I would have probably tried to get him help, because he would need it to pull that gun out from his butt! ;D

i probably should have. i probably should have been concerned when i saw the sign on his door that said no solicitors

well i tel you what i have been thinking about it all day and even though it was a bad experience what are the chances of that ever happening again. there are still two other old ranches on that road i want to check out hopefully there not related to the guy. lol :D

Sorry, don't think you have much of a
future as a door to door metal detector
salesman. ;D ;)

have a good un............

On the other hand, perhaps he has a buried stash on his property he didn't want you to find - might want to keep an eye on the property for a for sale sign one of these days :)

Glad it didn't get worse than it ended up being.

you know i didn't even think of that. good looking out even thought the guy was up there in age he's probably going to be kicking the can pretty soon. I'm sure who ever ends up with the place wont mind if i go out there. they will probably be tearing everything down anyway. the house looks like it had been rebuilt sometime in the 30's or 40's but the barns and sheds look to be in the late 1800 to early 1900's

Down here in Texas there are lots of ranchers or people that live in the country that will do the same thing. When they say "private property", they mean it. The way they look at it is, if you were not invited, you're not welcome. That all comes from people trespassing and leaving litter or damaging property. Then there's the other catagory, the just plain crazy ones.

Wow, what an experience! Maybe instead of him hearing "metal detect", he thought you called him a "mental defect"? ;D You better stick to the casinos in Reno for coins. Oh wait, forget that. They just spit out only the paper tickets now. :'(
Any places to detect up there in Virgina City? That is a neat little town.
Glad you survived o.k.

Having some distant experience in law enforcement may I say it's always a good idea to stand to the side of the door when knocking. Some will just blast you right through the door.

In our neighborhood a kid was killed this way. He saw some kids messing with this guys car so he went to the door to tell him. The nutty lowlife shot him through the door. The guy got off scott free.

The kid he murdered was a well-loved high school athlete and all-round great guy. He was always trying to help folks out. No more.

Keep knocking but be careful.

I wonder if the girl scouts get the same treatment selling cookies at his door.
you really should not be hassling old people any way.
You should have just give him your detector as a good faith gesture.

i would go back and f%@ with him tonight real good! pray for me please! glad you were not killed.

I was thinking about the second hand lions also. Glad the old man did not pull the trigger!!
