Halves with no reeding - worn off

I find many of my boxes have halves with the reeding worn completely off. In that past people have said this is caused by slot machines at casinos, but is that true? First I don't know of any half dollar slots second with only two casinos in NE how can that many halves be ground down.
I have rarely found silver in a box with lots of reedless halves, but EVERY box of halves has some if not half with no reeds.

I have never seen this in dimes or quarters only halves.

what causes so many reedless halves?

I worked as a slot tech at a casino for a bit. The coins constantly spin in a metal disk that dispenses them. This causes the rims to wear. The insides of the machines have large amounts of coin dust. I have no idea how the coins migrate. I sure used to love to root through the halves!

Yes, definitely casino halves. Most of you said casinos stopped 50 cent machines about ten years ago. That would be 2008. For the next few boxes I will look at the dates and see if any are newer than that year. My theory is all coins without reeds will be about 2008 and older.

Meg you may mention it to the bank maybe as Mark did they can do something about it? Tough call...

I guess I don’t understand what the bank can do, or why, if they have delivered the coin as promised, and the count is exactly right.

You would be surprised how many people search and reroll after edge searching. They can miss silver.

I use to date check ALL my dimes, but it was taking a toll on my eyes. However, when I get halves, I date check since the numbers are larger to see, and nothing gets overlooked. I've missed some dimes for sure, cuz some are tarnished like tea color. When in doubt rim checking, always pull it & check them.

Wasting time. Never date search unless looking for errors. I could search and re roll one in less than ten seconds. I didn’t look for the silver, I looked for the copper band.

Tempted to open the boxes right on the counter and reject them if they are the same as what I have been getting. But if I start rejecting boxes, I think it would be more honorable to cancel my standing orders. I'm hoping there is an explanation that won't force me to quit.

Ive done that before at two different bank. Opened them on the spot after getting rewraps the week before, and in one case refused them because the previous week they were short. Made sure to tell the bank it was short, that I wasn’t trying to get reimbursed but that I wouldn’t accept rewraps again because of it. They took them back, no hard feelings, and the next week the boxes were pristine (and had silver). Sometimes you need to make a stand. If you reject them multiple weeks in a row you may have to stop ordering, for a while at least, but more likely is that after the first week of sending them back the bank will tell the courier company that rolls must be unopened - particularly if they’ve been short.
