My buddy has been on a roll lately with old silver, first a two Reales from Spain and now a REALLY old one! 1500's ?!?! Looks to be a 159* hammer Spanish silver?? This coin is awesome, I never thought I would see 1500s come out of the ground around here! Any help on the ID would be great.

Nice finds!! I’m sure someone will help you soon.

In massachusetts ? That's just sick. Sick sick sick.

Yes, Massachusetts! Pre dates the pilgrims

Yes there’s going to be some late 1500s coins in any area that was settled in the early 1600s. They are hard as hell to find and not a ton out there but they’re out there. That’s a hell of a coin. Bill D has found several in Va. New England will cough one up every once in a great while. Congrats to your friend

Great find.It looks to be the pillars half real (Mexico mint?). I didn't know they were struck as early as 1600's. The ones i have seen and found were from 1732 and later.

Whoa you had me going! Unfortunately I think that’s a 1769 1/2 reale or something close. Killer silver though and a heart stopper!

Agreed. Definitely a late 18th century Spanish half reale. Still a great find!

Doesn't add up as a hammered 1500s coin to me, but still, silvers a good day.

PS. Its not what it looks like, it's what it is, that matters. (ID first speculate later)

1759?

Guess I should have looked a bit closer lol

Damn. It's not perfectly round. Maybe just wear

Nice going on the old silver!

What tipped me off was it wouldn’t have a date there before the 1730’s. 1500’s dates were much different if they even had them at all...

But like Ahab said, anything is possible is Massachvsetts so keep digging man!

Sorry for the false alarm

Sorry for the false alarm

Happens to the best of us but as others have mentionned everything is possible. Two years ago I have found a French hammered coins spill near Montreal. One of them dated from 1450's. That's well before Cartier or Champlain.
Great find never the less! 18th century silver is always amazing to find.

One time I picked up a shiny new clad quarter and saw two globes (some state quarter) and thought is was a globes and pillars. I shouted to a buddy then felt like a real idiot. Hahaha

"Oh darn, it's just a 1700s silver." 8-)

Great find, regardless of the exact date! I just moved next door to Mass. in the the Albany, NY area after living 8 years in Texas... those old New England coins are toast as soon as the ground thaws. Thanks for the inspiration!
