Hand carved lead button "8" "76"

Found at same site with silver tray that had "8" monogram.
This site spans 1817 large cent to 1908 Indianhead coins.
Better view of button, it's an "8" , then "76".
Possibly Rev War
This button is the size of a dime.
Any help would be appreciated! I just moved this to what is it with hopes of confirming if its rev war thank you for any help

Re: Hand carved lead button "S" "76"

Sure it's lead? It looks like lead in pic3 but not the first two.

pewter is very similar in many ways to lead ( since lead was the major base metal in pewter) and pewter was quite commonly used for many things as well as button making material.

DUH! I just seen the second pic it's on a dime! The edge of the dime is what confused me. I have no problem thinking lead button now. (even if pewter it would make little difference)

Hard to tell from the photo, but its way before CW. Late 18th looks most likely.

I agree with others who have said that this button is pre-CW by many years. It looks 1700s to me, but I have no clue as to what the letter and numbers represent. Perhaps Don in SJ might have some contacts that would be willing to take a look at it for you...

Best Wishes,

Could you dress up the button a bit, try to do more of a head on shot looking down on the button, when I played with the photo, I could not see the S or the 7 for sure..........(possibly a 3?)

The way i see it you have a pre civil war pewter button with a reg, or bat number on it. The way I understand is that if it's a button, is that old and has a number on it, you got yourself a nice piece of military history. It's probably rev war or war of 1812. Pull the guy's pension record and you will know if it's his. I bet his regiment number was either 8 or 76.

Re: Hand carved lead button "8" "76"

Having looked at the Lead 'Button' again, I'm beginning to think its not a button at all but a kinda cap/bung. Doesn't seem to have the usual shank shape. Is there a loop as such?

Instead of a button, it looks like a lead bag/bail seal with the connecting shank in the back middle instead of the top.
