"Its been a journey of learning for me on these"

Ha! yes, for me too. I think we can make a sure fire bet this wasn't made in the U.S.. Something matching of European manufacture will eventually show up, maybe something even Dutch. I guess we better fasten our seatbelts because until we can pin it down with something solid, the journey's not over yet. :D

Forgot to say, I read they were popular in France as well.

Any French connection in the area?

Crusader, I don't know where this was found other than it being Massechusetts, but as far back as the early 1600's you had Champlain wandering around exploring N.America; then you've got the Hugenots coming in the late 1600's and settling mostly in the south and Nova Scotia, but probably moving between. Then you've got King James "Defender of the faith of France.. as well as defender of the rest of your country. Here in New Jersy I even found a 1650's liard so I know at least that french currency was accepted then. No clue on any place specific place the french might have camped or lived in Mass. though. :icon_scratch:

Funny you should ask about a French connection. The person who owned the land was a French and Indian war soldier and a Rev. war officer. maybe he picked up the harness during the F&I war? :dontknow: thanks for all the input this just gets more interesting, you guys are the greatest :notworthy: dean

Dean, that's interesting and significant (if this matches a French example). As far as I know, nobody's made any close match yet, or at least hasn't posted one.

Sorry Dean, our posts crossed and I was responding to the one before this. Again, there's nothing specific to suggest this is French yet, but it sure sounds like you're in the best possible place for detecting possible French objects! Anyway, I think your relic has enough distinctive features to eventually pin it down, particularly with the resources the U.K. members have, and I'd resist the temptation to identify it based on specific location quite yet. (I'm still excited for you about this one! :D)
