Hellcat's first find ever

So I went out last night - first time ever! I was mainly trying to get the hang o the thing - what sounds it makes and all the settings/modes etc (I'm not a fan of instruction manuals). We just went around the ground of our apartment building (which is an old converted mill - about 300 years old so I figure there's got to be some nice things out there)

Wasn't expecting to find anything but bottle caps and screws because that is simply my luck.

I managed to persuade my guy to come along because I didn't want to look crazy ;) even though HE thought I was crazy. He kept making jokes about if I'd found the gold yet. It didn't help that we'd actually (by coincidence) just watched King of California - movie about a crazy gold hunting dude!

Then we hit a high note on the side of a worn grassy path. And I think curiosity got the better o him.

We dug down only about 1 cm and out popped a pen knife - it had a wooden handle that reminded me of my grandma's old kitchen knives that she's had since before she had kids.

It had a 2 blades - one smaller than the other with 'stainless' written on the big one and 'china' underneath.

Might not seem like much to you guys but it's my first find and it wasn't a screw! Yay for me.

Also found the end of a shotgun shell.

Re: Hellcat's first find ever

Thanks, Silvy. I have to get over going out myself though - we have kind of snobby neighbours and they kind of put me off; - they resented me when I was a slacker of a student and they resent me(some of them)now that I have an office job - no pleasing some folk I guess :p

I was so disappointed to learn about Scotland's 'Treasure Act' - we have to report just about everthing we find. The Treasure board then take it away for valuation etc and give the finder a reward equal to the value of the booty. Alot of people only report big/important/very valuable things though. I mean, if it's of national/historical importance then I would report it straight away but if I'd found a gold ring 100 years old, I'd probably not.....

What kind of rules do you guys have?

If that apartment building is 300 years old, you will have no problem finding old and neat STUFF !! TTC

Re: Hellcat's first find ever

Your place is ONLY 300-years old? I'm happy to hunt in areas 60-years old :D

For the first time out you did VERY well

I'll wager that there's still a lot of nice pieces just waiting for you to find there.
Check out the ground areas that seem relatively undisturbed. . . under old trees,
near over-grown hedges, stone fences, etc.

You might want to post a pic or two of the area your hunting. . . there's a lot of
folks here on TNet that may have a few ideas where to focus on your next hunt.

Good luck & welcome to TNet!

Re: Hellcat's first find ever

Hey there Hellcat, seems like just yesterday I was trying to help you figure out what kind of detector and where to buy it. So I'm dying to know what you decided on. BTW way to go on a brilliant first find. Hope there's gold in your future. SOD ;D

Re: Hellcat's first find ever

Hey Watercolor, I might just do that. I'll take pics when I'm out tonight and post them up here somewhere. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Dude....I just couldn't wait for anything to be delivered - I had an itch to go MDing, so I went to my local Maplin and bought one of their machines. It was £100...$55? And it must be American because it has lil 10 cent/25 cent symbols on the readout. I still have to read the damned manual. No doubt I'll be upgrading soon enough and will need your help for that!

Just wanna say thanks for the encouragement folks!

Re: Hellcat's first find ever

You are hooked already, you just don't know it yet, just wait till you find a coin that's really old and you are going to go nutz! Good luck to you, I really hope you do well!
