Hi I used to live in Woodbridge and am now in Stafford County. Despite the great history, Virginia pretty much sucks for finding easy detecting spots. My advice would be to keep asking permission or apply for a permit from Virginia Marine Resources to search waterways at least. I usually end up either 1) searching my own property ~ 10.5 acres 2) heading on a day trip to a crowded beach somewhere or 3) researching and identifying target areas outside of VA where they're not such douche bags about detecting.

Don't let the "negatives" get you down = born & raised in Virginia. Tighten up yer balls, ask permissions, and DON'T trespass.....

It's a huge world out there, and plenty treasure to be found.

One tip on getting permissions: make copies of old maps that show where houses used to be, and go to some of the houses on that map that are still standing. That used to be a good icebreaker when I was approaching homeowners I did not know to ask permission to hunt. First though get some practice so that you don't damage lawns...Try this site for the maps.

welcome from central Va . you're correct on private property being your only option . talk to people you know to see who has a place you can dig. All my permissions come from people I know and their acquaintances.
hunting Gov owned property in Va will get you in trouble .

Welcome! You are in the right state for civil war relics. Permissions are a must. There are some group paid hunts like Digging IN Virginia that secure sites once or twice a year.
