Help a noob

Hi ppl im really interested in getting into metal detecting but im a complete begginer so can any one give me advice on anything.

And also what would you reccomemd for me to buy a good metal detector in range of £200 pound or wont i get one on that budget

That's about $320 US.


Whites Coinmaster GT is a little bit more $ but close to that range. ($400 US)
The Garrett Ace 350 would be a decent choice.
Tesoro Silver umax or the Compadre for simplicity but very effective.
Fisher F2
Minlab X-Terra 305 again a bit more money. ($400us)
Teknetics Delta 4000
Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300

Any one of them would be a fine first choice. If I were to make a recommendation, either the Ace 350 or one of the Tesoros.
If it were my money, I'd probably get the Teknetics but only because I've never used one.

Welcome aboard and good luck with the hobby....the 200 pound mark is probably a bit on the low side and can't say I've heard of the Viking before...possibly a UK or European model.

One option would be a slightly used detector which you might be able to pick up on the classified ads on one of the UK
forums.

Recovery speed looks...awful! Might not be an issue in farm fields but in any kind of urbanized area, you could be missing lots of stuff.

Glad you tracked down a video on that unit.....believe the UK detectorists are pretty much restricted to plowed fields.
So I guess low and slow would be the rule of thumb under those conditions.

My advice would be to find an experienced local hunting partner to help you. It's important to learn the detector code of ethics and how to perform a damage-free recovery method. A local hunter will also know what detectors work best in your area and with the type of hunting you plan on doing.

Ive been looking at the Garrett Ace 250 theres a lot off good reviews and well in my budget with a big coil

Does any one reccomend these ill be hunting farms, parks, quarrys, moorlands etc

I'm a bit rusty on the Ace 250 but used it for a couple of seasons about 5 years or so ago....I made some pretty decent finds with it....lightweight, easy learning curve...it has a tendency to false if you run it to hot....I'd use a sensitivity setting between 4 and 6 notches and go for relic mode in fields or jewelry mode if doing green spaces.

Also would suggest those plastic ties along the coil cable to keep it from flopping around which also can cause falsing.

I took a look at the specs and the Euro Ace has a few added features which makes it worthwhile:-

1:-Double D coil for extra depth.
2:-Works better in highly mineralized soil.
3:-Works better to find non ferrous targets in iron trash.
4:-Better at finding small targets and better target separation.

What im thinking off doing is buying a

Garrett ace 250 and then buy a DD coil 11 x 8.5

Would that be the right idea

All things being equal with the added features of the EuroAce and the DD coil being supplied with it that's the one I'd go with rather than the Ace 250 minus those features and buying the DD coil separately.

I have the Ace 250 and am totally satisfied with it.. very easy to use and understand the controls...I have the standard coil and doing well with it..

You may also want to spend some of your money on ether a good digging tool or pinpointer..or both...

I too have the ACE 250 as my backup, and its a great machine, as mentioned thou, rememer to leave in your budget a quality digging tool and pinpointer. They are a MUST!!

Ive decided to get ace250 and propointer im collecting at the weekend it comes with The Ace PROformance Rhino 6.5” x 9” coil. ARE THEY ANY GOOD

im gonna upgrade to a DD 11 x 8.5 later next year
