Hello,

My mother purchased this painting maybe 20 years ago at a thrift store. She eyed the painting for a while and thinks she paid $25 after negotiating a bit,

On the back of the frame is a stamp from Monsignor Edward Hickey - who was known to have a big art collection. I am not sure what medium this painted on, it is a hard solid material, almost feels like stone.

If anyone has an idea of who may have painted this or any other information it would be greatly appreciated. I can add more pictures if needed.

Thanks,

Pete

Cool painting (presumably) previously owned by that prestigious collector of religious art. I have no idea who the artist was, or how old it is, but it’s a copy of the centre panel from the famous “Paumgartner altarpiece”. The original was painted by Albrecht Dürer sometime around 1500 and is currently on display in the Alte Pinakothek art museum in Munich, Germany.

Thanks so much for the information Red-Coat., my mother will be happy having it identified.

I did notice the original does not contain the same haloes, in the wikipedia reference it mentioned that original was modified in 1616 then restorers removed the modifications is 1903. Curious if the haloes were part of the modifications.

Again thanks for the information.

You’re welcome. Sorry I couldn’t help more

Below is how the centre panel looked in 1900, before the restorers removed the 17th Century alterations. Note that the tiny figures in the bottom left and right corners, representing members of the Paumgartner family, had been overpainted. The main nativity figures never had haloes, before or after restoration. Those are 20th Century additions by the copyist, probably because what you have was once used in a church rather than just being a piece of art.
