I found this at a Northern California beach today in the wet sand next to a deep under cut.
I don’t see any base metal wear spots and it looks hammered.
What is it?

I'm afraid it's a very inferior 'fake' and cast, not hammered... not intended to deceive, but as a play coin or souvenir. Google "replica pirate doubloon".

That is a base metal Chinese facsimile of an 8 Reale hammered COB from the Potosi mint in Bolivia. People sometimes throw them on the beach to fool metal detectorists as a prank. Children also sometimes play with them in the sand- burying them and then digging them up while pretending to be Captain Jack Sparrow or a member of his scurvy crew of misfits. 😄👍

They are correct. A replicated shipwreck coin. I have found a few over time and they sure do get your heart pumping for a bit!
