I live in Cumberland Co. NJ and have researched the area for possible areas to search for Indian artifacts. Have D. Cross's book, researched C.C. Abbott's writing plus many smaller reference books. Basically these places are all around me, yet in 40 years of searching I have yet to find anything. Greenwich which is loaded with Indian history is around the corner from me, I've hunted that area with no luck either. Any help in locating my first point would be more then welcomed.

Welcome to the site,Tash.

Surface hunting for relics is not very hard, all you need is permission to hunt a plowed field in an area that was frequented by prehistoric man.

Level fields near springs, bogs, rivers, and sometimes ridge tops are places to start. Walk the field until you start to see flint, and then grid search that area.

Good Luck, Post some pics.

Or walk the creeks themselves keeping an eye out for gravel bars and other areas that have collected material.
Familiarize yourself with the material the local natives used for making tools and projectile points and keep your eyes peeled for that material not necessarily the entire shape of an object most times you will only see part of something so knowing the material can make all the difference

well don't overlook area right on Delaware River banks. Mercer did a dig in Pt. Pleasant and found that Indians had occupied that area for over 3000 years. Fishing had to be very important to survival.
