Found this coin (or token?) today in a central California onion field. The area was a staging area for WWII troops and about a mile from a California (Spanish) Mission. can anyone tell me what this is? It is fairly thick and heavy.

Thanks,

RobJoh

Can't make out the letters. Almost looks like Betsy Ross sewing the American Flag.

I want to thank you all for your efforts to solve our mystery! Plug & Play was able to figure out what we found and showed a coin in much better shape for comparison. It makes sense - our coin was found about a mile from a Mission in central California.

Was it the mission close to Fort Hunter Liggett? I have always wanted to hunt that area but it is to long a drive for me.

Actually, it is one of two copper coins. One coin, with similar reverse, will read on the obverse side: ESTADO LIBRE DE JALISCO (mintage years 1858, 1861 and 1862). The other coin, with similar reverse, will read DEPARTAMENTO DE JALISCO (mint years 1858. 1859/8, 1859 and 1860). They are referenced as KM#355 and KM#356.
Great save and part of Mexico's history during the First Republic.
