Hi folks - any opinions on the date on this very rough shield nickel?
My first pre-1900's nickel!

I also recently found an odd object - the portion that looks like the head of a hammer spins and has a spring inside of it (so a clip of some kind) the piece at the other with the hinge still opens and closes ... pretty neat.

Thanks in advance!

Fairly confident the coin date is 1883.

1883 shield nickle date.webp

The other item may be a the back portion of a clip from a fashion accessory like a tie clip or clip-on earrings or a sweater clip. Maybe even a money clip... :dontknow:

You could clean it a little more zi use a jeweler's loop and have a microscope sometimes it's just worn to much but congrats on a great coin. Tommy

Looks like 1867.

Maybe... I don't see the 7 but I do see the 6 now.

I looked at the mint numbers. 1867 & 1868 each had over 28,000,000 minted. 1883 had on 1,400,000.

Odds are it's a '67 or '68.

Don't be afraid to lightly sand the date just a little to see it if comes out (320 grit or higher).
The coin is pretty much worthless to a collector.
Nice finds!

Funny how the card holder idea is always refuted by showing a patent or display selling them as cuff adjusters.

Reality - If you were a card shark, you would always be at risk of being exposed. Bad news if you had a card holder up your sleeve.

"No, no, ... this isn't a card holder, gents. It's just a cuff adjuster. Everyone knows that. See, I have one on the other cuff also."

Modern authenticators insist they were not card holders.
Card sharks insisted it, even harder. So, there we have it. Everyone agrees these were only cuff adjusters. :angel12:
