Help with Mason Jars

How large of a diameter could you find in mason jars for the late 1800's? And was there any info embossed on the bottom of the jar when they were made that would give an age to it

Ball, Atlas and Kerr brands and often used when mentioning Mason Jar. If you are referring to a Ball-brand glass fruit jar the site referenced below should be helpful, including a chart showing the subtle distinctions in the script writing of the word 'Ball' on the jar to differentiate the various manufacturing dates.
