I dug this at the King and Queen Co Colonial relic hunt in Virginia. It was dug in a field by a home site dating back to the 1700s. I have no idea what it is. Someone suggested that it may be part of a spur but I don't think so. It was twisted up from years of plowing so it is hard to tell what the original shape of it was but I believe it was curved like a horseshoe. Any ideas on what this may have been? Thanks.

Part of a purse frame I believe

had that thought too but it seems a bit thick? I've never seen one with a frame that thick.

It does seem a little bit heavy for a purse frame but it was hinged for some purpose.

Still not sure but now that I have looked at some examples of early purse frames I think it could be a possibility. The hinge looks very similar and some were fairly heavy.

One clue is the series of holes along the edge, which are seen in the picture of the back, used to sew the fabric to it. Here’s just one example of a fairly thick frame:

I just don't see where it would have sewn on. there are indentations on the back but no holes around it for sewing.
