Hey, all ya'll Texicans....

(that is authentic Texas talk, for the uninitiated)
Where do you do your artifact hunting? No, not specific, latitude, longitude, down to a gnats behind. Just maybe narrow it down to a county or part of the state. Show a good example from your area. The following is a newly found piece, from Lost Creek, Brown County.

I hunt Brown county, mainly. But am going to be branching out and doing a lot of looking around on the Brazos River, in Brazos County, now that I have some newly acquired water transport. That, is going to open up a LOT of possibilities that previously did not exist.

Hey Bravo !! Finds from Gaines Co. Plainviews and folsoms and a paleo scraper. We get a lot of wind up here and when you mix wind and sand, you get some nice paleo camps to hunt, My friend has a very nice 4" long Clovis from Gaines Co. also. Thanks Bill

I thnk I told you this morning, I hunt Hood County, Parker, Summerville, Palo Pinto and any where I can get into with permission, mostly surface hunt but a few dig sites...Seems like my eyes are more attuned to fossils, but I do get a chance now and again of finding flint....

Alibates flint from the Southern Great Plains region, western Oklahoma. Even with a less-than-perfect piece such as this one, the beauty of the material always makes them a prize to me. This piece actually found by my 7 years-old son.

The last few years, most of my hunting has been in Bowie County in the extreme N.E. corner of the state. I also look in Franklin County 50 miles west when I get time.

What do you think, could we get a thread going like Ohio? We certainly have a few contributors. Bear in mind this is not a competition, just a "let's see what we got in Texas and the SW"
I find it interesting to see the differences based on lithics and geography. We don't have the bannerstones, but we do have cornertangs. That is just one of the differences unique to our areas. What else can we put up?
Here are a few drills, one is even shaped like Texas. I have got to get these out in the sun for a much better pic, sorry.

Well, N.E. Texas is gonna more resemble the adjoining parts of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana more than your area of the state. These were woodland culture folks here. Here is a little bit of pottery from here. All personal finds.

A couple were sort of surface finds. An embankment had slid into a creek and thats where I found a couple of em. Also, my mom and dad's farm of course I'm able to dig. While Im mostly into points and what normaly comes up in midden areas, occaisionaly there will be a whole one in a storage pit.
Also, I've got prolly 20 or so in pieces that I've found in plowed feilds, and three that were washing out of a cow trail. Lots of pottery down this way.

Since you asked, west central Texas ; Edwards Chert.

Neanderthal says probably from the Jarrell Phase of the Texas Archaic, so that's what it is.

Texas is a whole different planet, I suspect. Scottsbluff, Agate Basin & stuff like that get put in the Paleo era there, when they're Early Archaic back east here -- probably because (?) their life ways didn't change that much.

At any rate, the larger sized unifaces (like this one) there seem to generally be Archaic rather than Paleo even though the technology is Clovis.

Does this indicate you have hunted this big ole hunk of geography? Nice piece you have shown.
I remember someone posting, a while back, that the scrapers found here seem larger than other places. Do you go along with that premise? (no, I am not one that thinks all things in Texas are bigger. )

Or maybe this is a square knife? I value your opinion.

BW : the business about scraper size increasing during the archaic is from a thread entitled (from memory) Texas Scrapers, posted some months ago. It's a cut-&-Paste from a series of articles in a Texas newspaper :

I only wish I could tell you what your piece "is." I suspect, from having pondered it for a while, that it was likely an adze, made for the uniface side to be lashed to a trimmed branch of a larger tree limb and the back edge shaped to butt up against it. But that's pure conjecture. In Texas and Florida both, they started out with the same basics everybody else did and went their own ways -- sometimes with some pretty strange results.

In Alabama, Paleoindian ; in Texas, Archaic.

My guess, you must be Manchus' buddy. Those are indeed some killer points. The Clovis...people would and probably do die for. Lifetime, Banner find.

I would very much like to see the corner tang knife in a smaller pic. It is hard to make out, also your small two piece frame in this post. What is the story with those two pieces?

Those Rockport, pieces are wicked! How do you find them and do battle with the salt water mosquitos at the same time? Those things will carry a guy off.
