Decided to hit a couple schools close to home today. The first one I had not ever hunted yet. As I am walking along side the building, to get to the play ground/soccer field, a window opens up, and a guy(janitor?) sticks his head out and says " Hey your not the guy digging holes and leavin em are ya?" I assured him this was my first time here, and I would never do that, and am disappointed that someone else did. I told him all the other local schools and parks I go to, and have never had one complaint. He said I could do my thing, I thanked him, stayed a while, got a little clad, The "slob" must hit it often, because it was pretty clean except for surface foil. Pretty sure I can cross this one off the list!

That has been one of my biggest complaints - fellow MD'ers that leave a mess. The only problem now for you is you will no doubt get credit for leaving some of the mess the inconsiderate MD'er left.

Same here, I always fill in any holes I make or not, even if they are gopher holes, sad, but in my book necessary...kind of like when my wife and I walk our dogs in a public venue, if someone else's dog poop is on the sidewalk everyone jogging or riding a bike thinks you're the dog people who didn't clean up after, just because you're the only ones present with a dog.

I did not see any holes when I was there, but there just to many other places to go, don't need the aggravation, and wont be going back! Lol

I was in a mowed area that is used for midget football and I here this guy yelling..........."get off MY football field. I don't need any holes for my kids to break their legs on". This is basically a couple acre plot that the city mows and maintains. No grass planting, just mowed weeds.

I responded that I don't leave holes but I made my way off of the field as it was the end of the day anyways.

I was talking to the city's maintenance guy who takes care of the area. I told him the comments and he said "Holes! I check where you have been and I can't even tell where you dug!" He said to ignore him and just hunt in hours where the football coach is not there.

It turns out that the "coach" runs the midget program and has a lot of people in his face because of attitude. He gives the kids nick names like runt, fatty, fumbles, etc. He is running the program because no one else will put in the hours.

So follow my maintenance guy's advice and hunt your school after hours and on weekends when the janitor with an attitude is not there.

If you are lucky you will run across the guy making the holes and be able to explain to him the potential consequences of his actions to all of us.

That's why I don't dig in football field playing area. It would suck to ruin a high school kids career because he broke or blew something out because one of my plugs popped out during the game. I don't care how much you stomp on something it can still get torn back up.

Worst I've had was while detecting a local park I was going behind a dopey digger and filling in the holes just so it wouldn't be blamed on me. I finish the last whole and hear a commotion behind me, I turn to see a large rump woman coming my way husband in tow. She tells me to go sniff another park you dog. Now im on the ground at this point and she demanding her husband do something to me, I stand up..im 6'1 and 270, husband stops dead in his tracks. I politely tell her to leave me alone, she continued berating me, I had enough, spoke to the husband and said you need to put your dog on a leash and take it home. She was grabbed and taken to the car, she gave me the one finger salute as he drove off. Why do ppl think it's "their" park etc...i believe I pay taxes too and have equal rights. If a foul mouthed 5 foot 300+pound hobbit must be seen at the park then my being there shouldn't offend anyone.

Get your facts first, then distort them as you please-Mark Twain

You should have answered, " YEP, dug all them holes. Love cats and cut a deal with em. They use the holes for a potty, then cover them for me. Works out real good. Saves them hurtin their paws digging in hard ground and saves me from shoveling twice"...

My detecting buddies and I have had this happen at 2 places we detect . 1 is a public park , so we promised the park superintendent we would keep an eye out for the offender . He said he appeciated our efforts . The other is private property . We mentioned the uncovered holes to the owner . He said it was an elderly friend of his and it's OK by him . So we just cover & fill as we find them . Kind of force of habit trying to keep a good image for detecting . There are bad or uneducated apples in every hobby . The best we can do is try to politely educate other detectorists to proper edicate on public property . If they refuse to listen or worse , the only thing your left to do is turn them in or you will be banned along with them . It's sad when it has to come to that , but I have no respect for people that have no respect for others .

While totally possible someone has been doing that, it was most likely a declaration phrased in the form of a question.
That way he could say what he wanted to say without having to give you a direct command.

I saw a couple kids with a wal mart detector in a park the other day carrying a full sized spade with them. I don't think I'll be going to that park anymore.
