I have helped my local historical society (at their 1830’s preserved farm) over the last couple of years with artifact identification/preservation, artifact recovery (metal detecting...) and aerial photography.

I was asked to stop by recently to detect around the spring house and one field as they are targeted for significant preservation rebuilds. (As always, everything is marked and tagged for their collection)

Lots of trash around the spring house.

But the field was previously a yard for the farm helpers simple home.

Also did some electrolysis and wax preservation of a few items for their collection. Before/after pics

Made it out yesterday to a cellar hole nearby wanting to try the Beach1 again.

Loads of shotgun head stamps and then a nice 25-25 squeak. First silver coin from this site.

Then got a nice 17-17, fairly strong, but not too strong. Intriguing signal.

Ended up doing some careful cleaning.

It is definitely “gold filled” as it is not flaking, but brass showing through the engraved areas. Still an unusual piece for me.

Here is the handful and my first ox knob or hane.

And to go with the gold “heart breaker” theme...

Good luck out there!

Nice work! Is the ring really gold filled? Be careful; old gold rings can be deceiving. The alloys can oxidize.

That knife is killer

Thx! I’ve found a bunch of 14 and 18k stamped wedding bands (thick and heavy) that were clearly brass. This is my first thin one with a lot of gold still showing.

That knife is so cool, looks like it has more gold then the fake ring lol Thanks for sharing

Great story and finds. Thanks for sharing with us.

Knife looks better than the pic you sent last night. How did you end up getting the rust off the handle?

That's a nice drawer pull you found at the Society site. Of course you aren't partial to drawer pulls or these wouldn't have been in the pile of scrap you gave me :laughing7:

Thx Steve! I tried the mayonnaise, then went to cider vinegar and finished off with peroxide. Plus lots of delicate scraping... Would have been a treasured piece hanging as a pendant back in the day. Hey... you were suppose to melt down the brass I gave to you... jk... I’m sure you found a few “treasures” in the 27 lbs of scrap!

There's been alot of those fake bands found this years - have a few friends that dont post here
that found 3-4 also and friends from long ago that have some too
lot found in NYC area

I gave a kid all the toy cars an airplanes. a girlfriend of mine got a lot of dog tags and whatever else she wanted. I found a nice good luck token from Niagara Falls that I kept. I have all the Boy Scout Cub Scout neckerchief slides pulled out. they may go back in the bucket. I'm probably taking it all to the scrap yard this Friday.
