I've been feeling pretty sick the past 3 weeks or so (thought it was Lyme, but doc can't find the cause) and haven't been able to get out to detect. So it was with great happiness that I headed out yesterday feeling much better to an old home site I found last summer way out in the middle of nowhere, but now I have a much better detector. My sister came too, wielding my old detector (She's hooked now too, lol). What a hunt, I still can't believe it.
We weren't there 15 minutes before I got a really good signal: It was a coin spill! I dug a 1911 quarter dollar, was over the moon, but there was more in the hole when I re-scanned it. Then pulled a 1911 dime, then I pulled a 1918 walker half dollar. And then, about a foot and a half away found a corroded v nickel. If the day had ended right then, I would have gone home happy.
Next good signal was a 1 reale coin from 1738 in good condition I could not believe my luck.
Happy doesn't begin to describe it.
Next good signal was a Hibernia copper in poor condition but i could make out the date 1781. Yet another first for me. And more adrenaline.
Then, to end the day, I found a little old copper that was so corroded and encrusted that I didn't think I'd get any detail from it:
But once home I did quick baths of peroxide on it, gently scraped away some crud with a toothpick, and then soaked it overnight in mineral oil and managed to see some bits of detail, but I don't know what it is. I hope one of you will recognize it.
It is copper, 21 mm wide, weighs 2 grams, and has a crown at top center on one side, and on the other side, a circular design (wreath maybe?) with the date inside the circle at the lower part. The date I can just make out as 17_9.
What a way to end an excellent day. Love my new detector. My poor sister only found some old bullets and nails, but she literally just started detecting a few weeks ago and she's still on the learning curve.
Well thanks for reading, and best of luck to all. And if someone has thoughts on what that corroded copper is let me know, it would be fun to have an ID on it.
