Wow 40s tomorrow and rain. That should get rid of most this frozen crap! Hasn't been above freezing in weeks.

Looks like we are going to play the high/low game with the temps.

We hit 36 Sunday, some decent melting happened but no way near enough.
From that point the temps are just free falling down to -11 tonight and there will be a 10-20 mph wind!
If ya want anything instant freeze dried, tonight's the night to put it outside!

When we get to March there had better be a significant improvement in the weather or even the skeptics among us will know something's wacky.

Don't mean to "rub it in"... yesterday was gorgeous.
I think we hit 76.

47° f yesterday

after 6" of fresh snow so we still ended up with more snow then I started with.
I was able to get out Shovel & clean my car off , even though I couldn't move it out of
the foot deep ice Hole it is in.

I have had many people tell me they were reluctant to knock on my door because of the warnings.

Well, I can almost see out my kitchen window...almost.image.webp

Detecting the snow piles would even be fun right now except for the dropping temps and wind.

Been watching the weather channel seem They have been having record highs in Alaska, they have been warmer than here for sure, they said the jet stream is slowing and causing it to be wavy and erratic. I had enough , I heard the birds chirping their spring songs in the snow, good sign

I have never experienced minus temps, except in a walk in freezer (+/- O). To have it that cold for days at a time.....Hell no!!
I can't imagine. 69.5 here right now.

I have been out in -32°F (real temp - not wind chill) and it's hard to breathe. It's fierce.

I have spent hours out hunting in -16°F and actually shot a buck (with a muzzleloader - our season is late December). By that time I could barely move my fingers and field dressing the deer was like putting my hands in scalding water . . . though after a few seconds it was much improved. I will never again be that dedicated a hunter. I've got so I don't like the cold.

We have sheep, chickens & turkeys so I am out at dawn and dusk to feed and get liquid water to them (Before & after work - who's idea was this!). It has been an awful February. We have set 13 new records for low temps this month!. And we're 10 or 12 degrees colder than prior records going back to whenever they started keeping track. We usually get cold or snow, and the cold is in January. The February has been both. Way too cold and way too much snow.

ARRC looks nice this time of year, but the summer lightning storms, hurricanes, humidity, tornados, and bugs snakes, alligators, and sink holes, are not very much fun. I do miss a warm sun and breeze, besides if you snowmobile or ski, or ice skate, or ice fish, huddling around the fireplace with a nice honey and brew after a fun day of outdoor activities has its own special warmth.

Charlie you're further south than me and it hasn't been a picnic this winter at all. Somebody said to us having one animal is like having a bunch of them as they need tending to and it ties you down. I'm still haven't ruled out a small herd of bison, at $35lb for a roast it's not hard to think about raising our own.

Bison! That's a big animal to convince to do what it doesn't want to. I drench and do the hooves of our sheep myself twice a year. They're small enough I can pick them up and lead them where needed. Hopefully you don't have to do much with a bison for "maintenance and upkeep."

We have Shetland Sheep and I enjoy them more than the Boer goats or Jacobs sheep we have done in the past. The Shetlands are small, 55 to 60 lbs, smart enough to be self reliant in grazing when there's grass, very cold tolerant in the winter, and easy-lambing; but not so smart as to be escape artists like the goats. They follow me around like puppies when I work inside the pasture and are actually nice little animals to be around and trainable. They like cheek rubs. The Jacobs were skittish, not very bright and plain belligerent . . . and delicious.

We don't get much meat out of a Shetland but it is outstanding. And the wool is up there with Merino for quality. Lamb sausage and even lamb meatloaf or "lamburgers" from the ground meat is out of this world.
