Honest Abe & my 2 cents worth

I went out to an amusement park that I hit for the first time saturday
with civil man. I got 2 cents, a '41 and a '54.

Then I got the mother signal,
a SOLID 92 no matter which way I hit it, 7 inches down, I was goin' in.
Halfway down a truck came barreling through the field right towards me.
A man jumped our and asked what I was doing. "Metal detecting" He asked
who I had permission from. I gave him the name of the lady. He says that
is his daughter but HE was the owner.
I told him that I was unaware that she was not the legal owner or I would
of contacted him before hunting.
He walks over and kickedd the plug back in the hole flinging mud all over me
and tells me to get the F&#@ off of his property.
Now, I'm a pretty big guy, so I stand up and He jumps in his truck and locks
the door. I swear I was just going to talk to him.
So I picked up my things and start walking. He drove next to me until I hit
the property line.
Now, I was trying to be civil, when he steps out of his truck and yells,
"Come back again and I'll kick your F@#$%*& AS$!" Well, nice or not,
I lost it. I took three quick steps and was on him before he could get back
in the truck. Like I said, I'm a big guy and this guy wasn't. So I'm staring
down at him and he is pinned against the truck and me (No touching
involved). "Now listen up, BUDDY." I said, "If you want to call the police,
we can settle this whole thing that way, because your daughter told me
that she was the owner and gave me permision. If you want to threaten
me, we can go that route too. Tell me right now and we'll finish it right now."
The man said, with a whiny crackle in his voice, "Let's just say my daughter
is to blaim and leave it at that. OK?"
I just walked away and left.
I am a true proponent of getting permissiion first, But what the heck are
we supposed to do in situations like this?????

That has happened to me before--where someone will give me permission and then another family member will either tell me "No" outright or put pressure on the one that said "Yes" so that all hell breaks loose. Fortunately this has only happened twice in 15 years. Once I was gracious and apologized and left the property, and the other time I gave 'em hell before I left because they were cursing me. When someone tells me "Yes," I assume that they have the power to give that permission. If they don't own the property, they should say so up front. I totally sympathize--and I think this dude deserved to get an attitude check the way he was talking to you. It is sad that you lost a site--but really the site was never yours to hunt to begin with, it sounds. At least you got to hunt it a bit before the incident.

YEAH! I still got to knock on that SOBs door and tell him I did find his ring! Thanks for the reminder.

Bravo! I think you did a superb job of handling the incident, kudos for not knocking his head off. I have ALOT of patience normally, but when someone threatens me it instantly shortens my fuse. I applaud your ability to remain composed in light of the situation. 8)
