...but the snow was coming down as I left the field. Should be able to squeeze a couple more in before freeze up. Nothing spectacular...a 3 ringer and a couple new/old coins. Of all the coins I've found in the last 5 years this is only the second 5 cent i've found of this style.

Never thought about it, but you are right, don't get many big "5" nickels, have way more big (older) coppers. Hope you are right about not the last hunt too. See some posting year end totals, south of us, I can't till the large lady sings, around dec 31.

Good luck out there. Everyone.

I've probably got 10 fishscales for every Big 5 nickel...weird.

Probably a lot having to do with the age of the sites you typically hunt. I probably dug 40 or so fishscales in my first few years (3 years) and wouldn't be surprised if only 5 or 6 since. (next 7 years) I think I have about 9 of those nickels, but again most came early, and the few since have been very random... like a middle of the field with nothing around type find.

If you hunted newer areas the numbers would probably change quite a bit. That and the massive amount of trash you'd usually be digging too. I'm sure mintage, years of use, and spending value at the time have something to do with it too.

Nice Finds, It's not over til it's over!

Well done Sir. :occasion14:

We were out today... a few coppers but not much more. Ground was frosty on top, but not bad to deal with. But sure won't last long with the cold we have now. So we called it unless next week brings some very good temps..

Don't call it yet...warm and rain forecast for Monday for this area. We are snow covered right now but I'll be trying my luck tomorrow morning at a couple sites that should have seen a cannonball or twelve. Hope to go out with a bang!
