Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

I hit my new spot today for six hours. I did a little exploring around, and found two old stone foundations in the woods that used to be sheds, a nice pond behind them, some huge Oaks, and what looks like the old farm road/path through the woods. That will have to be a future hunt. I decided to hit the fenced in horse area where Mirage (Bob) scored his 1/2 reale last week, and me an 1893 IH. I was going to grid it off, but one horse there had other plans. ;D He decided to chum up to me, and followed right next to me. Then he would move in front of me and just stand there so I could detect forward. I kept seeing a horses -ss in my face. :o :'( I had to keep going around him, and soon realized this was not going to work today. Next time I'm bringing an air horn with me. ;D Mirage was a lot easier to MD with. ;D
I then worked around the house yard again, but slower this time. I picked up a few keepers in the yard including the Merc, 3-ringer, musket ball, and a flat button.
After that, I tried my luck in the large pasture area in back of the house. It has a long slope down towards a dried up river bed in the woods. There are a few areas closer to the top that have large old stumps and some foundation stones. Also a LOT of horse manure too. :o I ended up finding a nice flat button, the decorative brass piece, and some other relics in the manure areas. ;D
Not a great day, but not too bad either.
As Larry the Cable Guy would say..."Get er' DUNG"
Here's my finds for today:

*1936 Merc

*18mm flat button - "Gilt" and "S" back mark.
This back mark is a first for me.

*21mm flat button - "Treble Gilt - Rich Orange" back mark.
Again, a first for me as far as back marks.

*3-ringer , Musket ball, round lead (bullet?)

*Silver what's it with "Schrader" on it

*A large iron ring with latch still on it. Is this a buckle of some sort?

*Asst'd relics and glass.

*Two wicked looking teeth that I have no idea what kind of animal they are from. Any dentists out there?
I'd hate to get bit by whatever animal these were attached too. :o

Thanks for looking Folks,
MM

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

next time walk out there with a bridle or an empty wormer tube, if those horses think they will have to work or get wormed they will stay as far away from you as possible.

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

I don't even want to know what a "wormer tube" is. I'm sure it's NOT a pretty sight. :o ;)
So a milk bucket won't work, huh? ??? ;D
Thanks,
MM

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

So, I'm better than a horse, huh? Well that's reasuring. ;D

Those are some cool buttons. I'm also jealous of the three ringer. That was one thing I had the idea were all over the place down there. Guess I'll just have to come back so I can get one. 8) I think your other site - the farm might have more. Where was the three ringer you found yesterday?

And I missed another Merc? ;) :D

Yeah, looks like a decent hunt. Gotta be some more old goodies there. Looks like some nice weather too. :)

How big is that "pond"? Is that a ways back? I did see a little "pond" down in the ravine where the stream had run through. What was the story of that?

Yep, you missed another Merc. And about 20 pulltabs too. ;) I get all excited when I get a good signal out in a clean area thinking it's a coin, only to dig a flippin pulltab. :'(
The three ringer was close to those few fruit trees on the horse side of the house about 10 feet from the gravel drive,
The Merc was about 20 feet in front of the old kitchen by those large planters. Some of those large planters are large wash tubs, so maybe your SE was freaking out by them? That's the excuse I'm giving you at least. ;)
The Treble Guilt button was in the front corner of the yard right by those telephone poles. That's my 2nd flat button in that area.
Time will tell on which of the two farms produces more CW bullets. I have two 3-ringers and a musket ball already from this site.
Have you mounted that reale over the fireplace yet? ;D ;)
Hopefully you & Nate can pull off another trip down some time.
Thanks Bob,
Doug
P.S. You are more handsome than the horse.

When I'm in a cow pasture the good signals alway seem to be in/under/next to a cow patty!
I always enjoy your post...keep em coming!

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Awesome finds Doug.

Wheres the dung find pics? ::) ::) ::)

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

No stone's unturned down that way Doug.....Nice diggin'!!.Follow that old CW road....Congrat's and HH!!

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Neat finds.

Since no one else has ventured, your big ring with the tang in it is probably a cinch buckle from a saddle girth. Looks like the pin part has lost a bit of its length.

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Wanna have some real ole down home fun?

Take a compressed air horn like those used on small boats and the next time a horse wants to show its butt...give it a blast...and the next thing you know you'll be picking your teeth up off the ground :D

I was riding my Appy behind the Villa Park Dam and this A-hole came up behind me on a dirt bike and gave it a goose or two and before he had time to smirk the Appy kicked out...Bam. Bam.

Crushed the handle bars and tank and sent Mr. A-hole flying.

Lesson learned...never spook a horse from behind...

In short, never trust a horse that shows it rear...especially a pony or mule.

Yep. Good way to become a dental poster boy.

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Great finds and pics MM. Sounds like you had a good time.

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Imma take a stab at this and suggest that the teeth are "wolf teeth", surgically removed premolars from one of the horses that have occupied that paddock.

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

I have yet to find a Merc. :'( I'm DROLLING. :o :o That one looks great thanx for the pic. BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

nice finds. in the first pic of everything you found, on the right side, there is some sort of gear. i went on my very first dig last saturday and found an IDENTICAL gear. it had some sort of rotating latch and spring wound from the center post. i assume it came out of an alarm clock. the one i found was about 2 inches down in a park that has been around here for at least 40 years. it was in a lot worse shape than what you found. any ideas as to what it might be from?

You guessed correctly. It was from a clock. I find a lot of old clock and watch pieces.

Nice stuff!! I also found a button a while back that says "Rich Orange" on it. I wonder what that means??
