Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

I hit my new spot today for six hours. I did a little exploring around, and found two old stone foundations in the woods that used to be sheds, a nice pond behind them, some huge Oaks, and what looks like the old farm road/path through the woods. That will have to be a future hunt. I decided to hit the fenced in horse area where Mirage (Bob) scored his 1/2 reale last week, and me an 1893 IH. I was going to grid it off, but one horse there had other plans. ;D He decided to chum up to me, and followed right next to me. Then he would move in front of me and just stand there so I could detect forward. I kept seeing a horses -ss in my face. :o :'( I had to keep going around him, and soon realized this was not going to work today. Next time I'm bringing an air horn with me. ;D Mirage was a lot easier to MD with. ;D
I then worked around the house yard again, but slower this time. I picked up a few keepers in the yard including the Merc, 3-ringer, musket ball, and a flat button.
After that, I tried my luck in the large pasture area in back of the house. It has a long slope down towards a dried up river bed in the woods. There are a few areas closer to the top that have large old stumps and some foundation stones. Also a LOT of horse manure too. :o I ended up finding a nice flat button, the decorative brass piece, and some other relics in the manure areas. ;D
Not a great day, but not too bad either.
As Larry the Cable Guy would say..."Get er' DUNG"
Here's my finds for today:

*1936 Merc

*18mm flat button - "Gilt" and "S" back mark.
This back mark is a first for me.

*21mm flat button - "Treble Gilt - Rich Orange" back mark.
Again, a first for me as far as back marks.

*3-ringer , Musket ball, round lead (bullet?)

*Silver what's it with "Schrader" on it

*A large iron ring with latch still on it. Is this a buckle of some sort?

*Asst'd relics and glass.

*Two wicked looking teeth that I have no idea what kind of animal they are from. Any dentists out there?
I'd hate to get bit by whatever animal these were attached too. :o

Thanks for looking Folks,
MM

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Your hunt was much more successful than mine, MM! I came away with one little keeper. :P And today was just as bad. :D
To get rid of the horse..just throw your arms up and yell...he'll scurry off.

Congrats on those finds! Nana :)

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Don't be so tough on the horse. He just might have done some detectin' of his own in a past life and wanted to see if you had what it takes..... ;D

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

MM,

Please be careful around those horses.
and don't use an air horn, those big guys are just as courious as kids.
All they are telling you is they are craving some touch.
they are very social animals and love the compamy.
Next time bring a bag of apples, once they have a taste toss an apple a ways away when the horse goes for it do your detecting.

Use an air horn and you may lose your permission to hunt the property.

Just a suggestion,
Thom

Ok.. being a "on again off again" smoker... where I smoke for a couple of years and then quit for a couple.. and yes.. I know it is a bad habit.. BUT.. this is one of the advantages.. blow a puff of smoke in their face.. and they are gone!! Helps with bugs too!!

hmm.. guess the bugs and horses are smarter then the smokers!! ;-)

One place I hunted had a bunch of year old colts in the field .. they were like 400+ lbs kittens!! They they were carrying on.. playing.. one of them kept running up to me.. really close and then just standing there like I was suppose to do something?? and then would take off again.. it was pretty funny till he step with in an inch of my foot.. stomping around like that and me wearing sneakers... had to jump the fence at that point!! Had another place this year.. got warm so I hung my sweatshirt on the fence.. big mistake!! I looked up later to see one of the horse freaking just prancing along with my shirt in his mouth.. took awhile to get that one back.. and by the time I did.. it went for black to more of a horse poo brown in color!!

Your Schrader thingy is an old valve stem cap. Here's a similar one.

Thanks DKW. That makes perfect sense, because I found it right next to the gravel drive at the front of the house.
How ironic you found the match on a "Snyder's Auto" site. That's my last name. ;D
Great job on the ID.

Nice finds there. The teeth look like my ex boyfriends, oh I forgot , he had no teeth, maybe one and he called it "old yeller". Nice mercury dime, congrats :D

LMAO!!! ;D ;D ;D
That was funny. Thanks Wanda. How many hours did it take him to get through an ear of corn? :o ;)
If he wants them back let me know.

Thanks Nana.
I tried that with my boss, but he keeps coming back. ::)
I think I'm more afraid of the horse stepping on my foot or coil more than anything. ;D

Thom,
You must not know my sense of humor yet. The air horn comment was a joke. ;D I would never do that. I only use the air horn on telemarketers that call my house at dinner time. :o
I'm actually glad I gained this horses trust after a few times in there. I think it's hilarious that every hole I dig, he goes an sniffs it out. You're right, they are curious like kids. ;) The donkey had me worried at first, as I heard they were a bit mean, but he's been fine so far.
I'll bring some treats with me next time.

Me too. I'll post them in the "What is it" section to see if we can get a correct answer.
I found them at the lower end of the horse pasture on top of the dirt. This is right next to the woods and there is a large dried creek bed at that end.
I'm thinking beaver or deer maybe.

Yep...that would hurt! Glad we found out what they were from though! :D

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

nice finds and looks like to me you found a new hunting partner :D

Re: Horses make lousy partners & Treasure hides in dung

Treats are going to backfire on you. They'll just keep wanting more. Probably all of them. You should have a stick to wave, bring it from up to down really fast several times so it makes a whooshing sound. Maybe hit the ground with it. Don't touch them with it, of course. They'll think you're bossy and going to make them work and leave you alone.

Bluestem,
Thanks for that info. I thought the treats would be a big mistake. :o
Horses must be a lot like kids. Mine think I'm bossy when I leave them a chore list. That pencil must be like a stick, because they run every time I start writing. ;D
