Hunted an old one room school site at the invitation of Steve from BG. While I have yet to find my first silver, I did find two V-nickels, my first 19th century coins. One is 1891, and other has two much green right now to tell the date.

What is the best, and safest, way to clean these beauties?

Naval Jelly.

Boiling peroxide will get rid of some of the crud. Just put some in a bowl or glass and pop it in the microwave for a minute or so. Take it out and put the nickel in it. Don't leave it in too long. Maybe a minute or two then check it. You don't want to clean it too much because then it will look pitted. Somebody with more experience should chime in soon. Just don't over clean the thing or it may look worse.

Congrats on your first coin from the 1800's!

Definately not electrolysis! I found a nice one with a stain and it darn near cooked away in just a few minutes! DOH! Monty
