How far offshore of Capa Hatteras do you have to go to be able to metal detect in the water?

I know detecting right offshore is illegal. But how far offshore do you have to go to legally metal detect underwater?

I can't find any info on this. Please post sources if you can.

State control of offshore waters off Cape Hatteras generally extends 3 nautical miles from the coastline for the state waters.

Metal Detecting is forbidden in Cape Hatteras National Seashore which is about 70 miles long...

Ok. 3 miles offshore. That's a pretty long swim, but that's good to know.

I knew the entire shore was off limits.

I think it starts at the Southern end of Nags Head right? Where does it end?

You’re right on the continental shelf. She drops off real quick not too far off the beach.

Go to Google maps and it will show you. It stretches from the southern end of Bodie Island to Ocracoke Inlet, including the islands of Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke.
