Today is my Husbands Birthday and Cubfan64 wanted to go down by the river and snag some driftwood, he asked to park in my driveway. Of course it was fine, but now I have the itch to get to the fields again. So I pouted and hinted and finally ended up bailing on my poor Hubby on his birthday :D. So Dan, Paul and I went in search of the other foundations down there. Dan thought he knew where they were, I should have known better ;)! Thankfully a friend that has been telling me he wold show me exactly where they were showed, brought us right to them! Poor Dan would have only been one whole field off. Lots of trash and iron, but really cool to be around. A couple of signals I dug are still there, I would have needed the backhoe to get them out. I did find the silvery items in a trash dump there. The heart must be a jewelery box top, there is cloth on the inside.

Detecting on they way through the field to the next field, Dan is hollering I'm digging to China. I said "I didn't think we were looking for Chinese coins?" :D Now Paul says I found a button, I run over and SWEET plain front with "BEST STRONG stand" ???? on the back. I'm sure about the Best and the stand, I need to clean it a little better. Dan hollers I'm digging up a car ::). Kept us laughing.

Off to the field where we found the Indian heads (1865 was the oldest coin yet). Once I remembered to turn my detector on :-[ I'm digging my cool rusty relics :D, Dan is digging huge holes with nothing in them (gotta be something wrong with that Ace, poor guy), Paul finds another button. Sweet again, it says double gilt on the back and has a green coating on the front. He also dug the square piece that has EN WELCH NFG CO on it and the watch? piece that has a serial number in it. Finally I dig a cool old buckle that says GERMANY on one side of the clasp and ??LTD on the other, nice.

To end the day Paul says I don't know my coins well but I think I found a large cent, now I'm wiggling around waiting for him to pull it out of his pouch and Dan is still looking for Chinese coin's ;). I take one look and tell Dan to get out of that hole and come over here. The nicest Large cent that has been in the ground for over 200 years you will ever see! 1805!!!!!!!!! Nice job Paul!!!!! Beat the last coin out of that site by 60 years!

Paul got his driftwood on the way out, I proceed to cook a nice Birthday dinner for the Hubby. Thanks for getting me down there Paul, it was great!

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Happy Birthday Gerry!

Very nice old Large Cent!!!

Unfortunately I live in a part of Michigan where not too many of those pop out of the ground. Especially not ones THAT old. I've managed to scare up an 1846 and an 1851 though.

Someday I'd love to hunt an area of the country that had earlier popuation. Maybe I'll take a road trip next summer when I get home from Iraq.

WTG on the super finds!!!

Awesome finds, the heart thing is cool, what is it? The draped bust copper is the best!!!

Gypsy I'll try to take a picture of the back when I get home tonight, it may be morning before I get a chance to post it though.

Hi lost, you are more than welcome to join me if you would like. I may be able to get back there for a couple hours on Wed afternoon?

I hope you do get a chance to get out this way when you get home Sgt., you'd love it. Thanks for keeping us safe :).

It's actually just nice being down there away from the everday hustle and bustle. Back to reality :D.

Great finds. That looks like a fun place to hunt. The scenery is beautiful. Tell paul congrats on his large cent. it's a beauty!

Thanks (I'm Paul), this was my first Large Cent find ever. I found 2 old copper 1/2 cents a few weeks ago too - I think I'm hooked on old coppers :)

I'm glad we got you out of the water Paul ;). Those fields are fun. CONGRATULATIONS on a copper Fall!

Looks like a lot of land to search. Looks like a great peaceful place to hunt.

Draped bust LC looks sweet. :)

How could you ditch your hubby on his birthday?! :D He must have had something else to do. ;)

Kim, I looked at two of those buttons and judging by the style and backmark, the one in cartouche DOUBLE PLATED appears to be with the types produced in England 1796-1805 or so.

The BEST script button matches ones that are listed for around the War of 1812, give or take a few years......

Again, buttons are great finds , the backmarks are so interesting even when the vast majority found are plain on the front side. They are great indicators of a sites occupation age and usually where there are buttons, there are coins. :)

Excellent pics and finds, CG. When you get a chance harvest that hornet's nest. If the hornets are still there you can build a fire underneath and smoke them out, but I believe that your "winter" may have set in to where they may have left already. I have 2 hanging in my house...one is over 40 years old and the other about 15 yrs. I saw one at a antique shop and did not look as nice as mine and they wanted $50. I can tell you more...just PM me.

;) RR

Bob, My husband is a work aholic :D, so I could go detecting for the morning or paint trim, hmmmmm, tough choice but someone had to make it! ;)

Don thanks for the info, I thought they were mid 1800's but am glad they are ealier than we thought. Between the coin and the buttons, I think you are right about us finding a state copper down there. I hope I'm the one to dig it, it would make my year!

RR I'm a little nervous about bringing the nest home, I did think about it, but my Dad tells a horror story about bringing one home. Do not put it in a vehicle with the heat runnig :D. I will deffinately PM you, I'd love to bring it home. Thanks!

CG..Man I wish the draped cent I just found had ANY detail as noce as yours...that's one sweet coin.

I think though the black button is my favorite. The lettering type looks very old. It's great to have a spot that produces oldies isn't it? ;D

CG - I forgot to point it out to you, but there was another hornet's nest near that one. I'll take one if you get the other :P

Dan, Buttons, buckles, coins, my 3 favorites. I really can't believe the condition of the coins comming out of there. They still use good old fashioned cow poop for fertilizer :D.

Now Paul......you are not going to make me get both of them by myself are you? Remember the story about my Dad? You better be getting back here and help me! :D It's a deal! ;)

Great finds. This is the time of year, when the fields are getting plowed under, when they're great for detecting.
BTW, I never realized cow poop preserved coins... that sounds like bs,,,,,,,,, ;D

isn't it a shame how the fertilizer gets after the largies.....still no better feeling than swingin then seeing the flowin hair........not too personal right?

Congratulations CubFan, that's a nice large cent.

Country Girl....Great pictures!

I don't know about going after that nest.
But, If you should happen to go out and try to get it, have someone video tape you.

Sounds like it has the makings of one of those America's Funniest Home Video Episodes, you know the ones about things not to do ;) ;) ;)

Just kidding----

HH,
JCH

Johnny, you'll have to get back here and help find more of those coins. Wanna help get the nests? ;)

I got it.......we'll make Dan do it! He'll try anything. :D

Why don't ya just tap the side of that nest with the coil on yer detector and see what happens ::)
Just kidding, they're nasty little buggers and the can fly faster than you can run, I found that out once the hard way.
