How to ask for reject tray stuff?

Is there a proper way to ask for the stuff that falls into the reject tray in a banks coin counter? The bank I dump at has a machine and only on one occasion when I dumped dimes did I get an additional bonus. My dimes all came thru fine and the teller brings back an British Eastern Carribean Territories 10 cent piece. It wasn't in my rolls so obviously something that got left by another teller.

How can I maybe ask for anything that may fall thru? There are many tellers at my dump bank also. So not likely to have a relationship with any specific one because they vary every time.

I believe people say that the banks just toss that stuff away because they aren't allowed to have any financial gain off the coin counter or something?

Different banks have different rules for the "inaccessible" reject trays. There are often two types of reject trays in some machines. The tray you can access when the machine is normally being used and a secondary tray that is only accessible when the machine is opened. I always ask for the rejects found in, on or under the macjhine if i fill up a bag or jam the machine and they open it up. Being polite and not wearing out your welcome helps tho it is hit or miss on what tellers will say or do.

After a while you will learn the differnt machines and bank policies. Just gotta look ask and learn.

Heh, I generally ask if I can have the rejects as I'm reaching my hand into the tube to take them!

I just ask,I tell them that I donate them to the schools when their studying about the country the coin(s) come from,the tellers usually give them to me without any problems.

at my bank, anyone can access the reject bin. i take anything in there whteher it is mine or not.

My banks coin counter has a reject slot and I have found foreign and bent coins that were not mine. When they open the machine to clear a jam or change a bag, I see there is a white plastic tub mounted in the front door of the machine but has no access from the outside. The teller just dumped the contents into the trash can right next to the coin counter so I said I wanted those and dug them out. I got a token and a few misc. coins from that plus a few pieces of costume jewelry.

Now when I dump, I check the trash can, too.

Good tips, but I'm thinking shoulda mentioned my banks machine is behind closed doors and they take your coins and run them. Been trying to hit up coinstars, but never anything in the trays.

Just ask them if they can clear the magnet for you and if they have any foreign coins if they would save them for you

Most banks view foreign coins as little more than trash since they can't convert them to cash (shipping takes away most of the finds). The exception being Canadian/Mexican coins if you are close to the border. Just let the tellers know you are a coin collector and they will be saving interesting things for you. Keep in mind that not all machines have a reject slot, most just have a magnet and the coin will just get stuck in the machine if it is too wide to pass through.
