You might want to get a "copper brush" (I believe they are made out of camel hair) to use after using the appropriate method for cleaning old coppers. Most reputable coin dealers should have them for sale. They really give the older coppers a nice even appearance and does not harm the coin. A friend of mine that has a huge collection of large cents of nearly every variety imaginable swears by them.
