UPDATE: I posted some pics of some of these bottles after cleaning below in post #35. Hope you enjoy the pics!...............Cheese

Hello folks!

I had an interesting time the past few days. Forum member "Levi'sdad" came down my way to visit for a few days. We hit a few detecting spots and found a couple neat things. The best I found was a silver war nickle (didn't hit the jackpot, but silver is nice anyway). The highlight wasn't detecting though. I recently found out where the old city dump is located. The town dates from around 1820, and the dump seems to have started somewhere in the mid 1800s and ended maybe in the '20s. There are very few screw cap bottles there. The dump is probably over 3/4 mile long and in the woods. We hunted at what seems to be the most recent end of the dump. I found old bottles (blobtops, hutchings, etc...) at the other end, but it's grown up too high. We may hit it when the weather knocks back the undergrowth.

We met up with another forum member "offcenter" (he and I are the ones who located this dump), and took off to the woods. The first time we discovered the spot, we parked so far away that once we found the dump, we had hardly any time to hunt because it was about to get dark. The hike back was killer. This time, we parked at a closer spot, but still had to hike in a little ways.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the area. Offcenter is holding up a bottle to admire it. Levisdad is looking for a spot to put down the backpack. You can see how thick the bottles are. Many are right on top, and seem to go down about 12 to 16 inches in the ground at this end of the dump. Deeper at the older end. The bottles are on the ground like this all over, for a loooong way through the woods. Offcenter found a broken blue poison bottle that would have been awesome. He did find a complete one on the trip when we discovered the dump. I found the broken pottery jug top. There are lots of these type jugs, large and small, all broken.

Hope you enjoy the pics. We had a great time!

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Cool i would like to see what els you find good luck

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Nice finds! I found a bottle dump here in New Jersey, I've been back there alot over the past year or so and I've pulled up at least 300 bottles...probably more. It's a pretty easy one to dig as the bottles are kind of sticking out of a creek embankment, I don't really have to dig down, just kind of sideways...lol The dump I'm digging dates from around 1900 - 1920 or so, I'm hoping to find an older section if I keeep at it.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Man, I'm green with envy. ;D ;D Y'all have a gold mine there, I wish I could be in this with y'all, I'll be in hog heaven. :D Good luck and post pics of all the action.

Congrats!

;) RR

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

I started hunting bottles when I was a kid and to me I would say that that is the equivalent of a virgin CW site or even more! For sure the find of a life time and I would say if you have unrestricted hunting there you could make a living on that spot.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Please post your finds in the bottles and glass section. You probably will get more help with ID and rarity.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah Ed, slow season has already hit. I might throw a few duplicate bottles on ebay if I get the time. I'm pretty selective at the site, because I already have so many bottles. I keep the best, most interesting, and all the blue cork tops.

I agree SWR, that broken poison was a heartbreaker. There are more I'm sure. I hope one ends up in my collecion.

Ivy walls...I clean them with soapy water and a toothbrush on the insides. If a toothbrush won't go in the neck, I dump a little sand and gravel in it with some soapy water, put my thumb over the opening, and shake it up. That usually cleans them out unless they have mineral deposits built up in them.

Ed-nh...you got it...that's a Nu-Grape bottle. I like it too. This one is fractured, but not broken. It's the most complete one I found. There were several, but they were broken. I've got this one until a better one shows up.
I don't see any bottles from the '40s that I can tell. They seem to be from the 20s and back. There are only a few screwcap bottles, and they are early types...most are the blue vicks bottles.

Metalfury, sounds like a great spot you've got. Have you sold any of the bottles you found? It's tough digging at this spot...so many roots.

River Rat...don't you get over this way once in a while? If you make a trip this way and want to hit the spot, let me know. I'll take you to it if you'll keep the location under wraps. The spot is ok for us now, but if too many folks started showing up, it would become off-limits for liability reasons.

I'll try to keep updated with pics. I'm not sure when we'll be going back, but it probably won't be long. Remembering to take my camera with me on these trips is the hard part. I am very anxious to hit the older end of the dump though. In a limited search of the area, there were blobtops and hutchings (is that the right term) soda bottles. I did find one early hutchings style coke bottle, but it was broken. There are signs that someone dug here years ago. There's plenty more to find though...it would take several semi-trucks to haul all the glass out of here.

Downindixie, I think I will :D.

I cleaned these with soapy water, and I cut the shot out of a 12 guage shotshell with #4 steel duckshot and poured it into these bottles with a little soapy water. I put my thumb over the opening and shook them up. The shot cleaned up the insides really nice, while a scrubber sponge cleaned the outsides.

I love the look of old bottles all cleaned up. ;D

I do too! You did a good job...they cleaned up nicely. I never thought about using duckshot, I have to keep that in mind. I've use the sand & water technique. Can't wait to see more finds.

;) RR

Hey man, I forgot how many bottles you picked up! I cleaned up a few of mine. I will have to try the duck shot thing, most of mine have plenty of dirt inside that I cant get out.
