UPDATE: I posted some pics of some of these bottles after cleaning below in post #35. Hope you enjoy the pics!...............Cheese

Hello folks!

I had an interesting time the past few days. Forum member "Levi'sdad" came down my way to visit for a few days. We hit a few detecting spots and found a couple neat things. The best I found was a silver war nickle (didn't hit the jackpot, but silver is nice anyway). The highlight wasn't detecting though. I recently found out where the old city dump is located. The town dates from around 1820, and the dump seems to have started somewhere in the mid 1800s and ended maybe in the '20s. There are very few screw cap bottles there. The dump is probably over 3/4 mile long and in the woods. We hunted at what seems to be the most recent end of the dump. I found old bottles (blobtops, hutchings, etc...) at the other end, but it's grown up too high. We may hit it when the weather knocks back the undergrowth.

We met up with another forum member "offcenter" (he and I are the ones who located this dump), and took off to the woods. The first time we discovered the spot, we parked so far away that once we found the dump, we had hardly any time to hunt because it was about to get dark. The hike back was killer. This time, we parked at a closer spot, but still had to hike in a little ways.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the area. Offcenter is holding up a bottle to admire it. Levisdad is looking for a spot to put down the backpack. You can see how thick the bottles are. Many are right on top, and seem to go down about 12 to 16 inches in the ground at this end of the dump. Deeper at the older end. The bottles are on the ground like this all over, for a loooong way through the woods. Offcenter found a broken blue poison bottle that would have been awesome. He did find a complete one on the trip when we discovered the dump. I found the broken pottery jug top. There are lots of these type jugs, large and small, all broken.

Hope you enjoy the pics. We had a great time!

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

That could be a gold mine of finds. However, you should take a shovel and screen the area. It's the best way to find good stuff that you might not with a MD cuz of the amount of trash. You could have a lot of fun there.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Awesome find. I have tried to do a little bottle hunting myself with no luck. I love the old bottles. Please keep us posted with pics.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

The bottles in the pictures date from around 1890 to 1920. Definitely go back with a shovel and a pitchfork. Maybe you can find an early Coca Cola bottle since you're in Georgia. Too bad about that broken embossed cobalt blue poison.

cheese,

congrat on finding a nice dump.

Looks like you have your work cut out for
you. Should take some time to work that
area.

Nice stuff you pulled up.

Is there a road, or was there a road running
along the dump? Is it in any type of gully?

Dig deep, dig slow, dig a bunch ;) ;D

Again, congrat.

have a good un.................

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

i think you may be able to go into business for yourself (again) slow season is coming ;D Fing sweet!!!

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Are you sure your dump is early 1800s? Or does it just stretch into the 1900s? Screw caps and crown tops are Automatic Bottle Machines (ABM) made, ie 1910-present. Pre1880s is the stuff you want. Look for bottles with blob tops, collars, pontils, and strap sides. High value bottles have embossing, embossed slugs rather than blank slug, and high value colors include, blue, green, black, and red. If you have an early 1800s dump with 1900s stuff in it you need to strip quite a few feet off the top to get the good stuff. Good luck, and if you're anywhere near me, I have a shovel and a scratcher. That brown bottle with the embossing looks like it might be something. I would have a closer look at that one. Good luck with it!

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Very cool site! I wish I could hunt that because I love those old bottle dumps. Keep looking for those colbalt POISON bottles....selling for a pretty penny right now.
Hope to see more pics soon. Way to go you guys!

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

I'd love to find a site like that, old bottles are cool. Work it hard and keep us posted! Great looking bottles.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!

Nice find on the bottles. I have dug bottles in the past. That pig soda is cool is it "new grape"? Looks like you have bottles from the 1800's to the 1940's. If you dig a bit you may find the older part of the dump. Good luck out there.

Re: Huge bottle dump....HUGE!
