HUNT WITH KEITH ( UGOTIT22) 1829 JACKSON INAUGURAL BUTTON & 1840 HT TOKEN

Got out for a half of day to some cellar holes i been to before,Keith (ugotit22) met up with me later in the day at the sites. 1st site gave up the token.thought it was some kind of old political token and pouched it.went up to another site.1st target was this tiny childs ring no markings and its gold plated and looks fairly old. then I dug a larger tombac and a small cuff button.then behind me i caught a glimpse of someone scared the crap outta me .it was Keith
laugh.gif
.we then went down to another hole.he got a fattie somethin..IH or flying eagle not sure until he cleans it up and posts. i got one more button then we called it a day.
cleaning last button i see a weird backmark i never seen before? under the loop i see ANDREW JACKSON MARCH 4,1829 plain front.it's a inaugural button! how cool and what a suprise!
and i looked up the token,it's considered a hard times token just a smaller variety so im counting it as a copper!
laugh.gif
.thanks keith and I wish you and your wife to be (saturday)many years of happiness!

Those Jackson inaugural buttons are awesome man! I didn't realize the history of that campaign but they had a a special on TV the other day about how he had lost the previous election even though he had won the most electoral votes. Its a pretty cool story... Anyway, great finds!!

fantastic finds! love that campaign token

I think most of the Jackson buttons have a plain front... At least that's what I've always heard? I know I've seen quite a few Jacksonian plain face flatties... Maybe just something to be a little different from previous campaign buttons? Jackson=trend-setter :laughing7:

No, not common at all.. seems like I only remember a handful being posted here (quite a few probably wasn't the right phrase)

all I meant was the Jackson buttons I've seen had plain faces, which weren't many

after reading up on the hard times token and saw it was gilted,i decided to use the toothbrush and soap on it to see if there was gilt under the dirt.yup!

Nice very nice!

I have never seen that particular back - have seen a few with words outside round line but never the square like yours - so it might be very rare
cool token - I got a few HT tokens last yr
ax head looks like a log splitter - couldnt tell you the age though - you use that on huge logs -you drive it in and then use a sledge hammer to drive it slowly thru - I used to split wood when I was a kid and used one like it - does not mean yours is not old - they been using same design for yrs

WTG on your Finds, especially Andrew Jackson Button:icon_thumleft:,,HH

Great hunt for sure, my Hard Times Token book indicates it is either a 77 or 77A, does not mention a 77B, HT 78 are entirely different. Since your HT is copper, it lists the Rarity at 5. Excellent find. Update: After looking at the reference you gave on the token, it is probably more up to date than Rulau's HT book, so perhaps it is the higher rarity variety, seems to be some differences in descriptions. Hope it is the R-8 variety, especially since condition is rather good.

The Andrew Jackson button appears to be the most rare one listed in Alberts book PC 82 "The inscription ANDREW JACKSON MARCH 4 AD 1829" with 24 stars encircling on back of button; 1 piece. RV 250 (Albert's Relative Value system in the 1970s) Yes, those buttons were plain faced. One reason it always pays to clean the backs of plain buttons, especially in that size range.

Wow, RV250 is way up there...

Congratulations on a great score !

Thats some history saved once more. Awesome job on those finds

The token is a stellar find by itself. The Jackson button is in reality a Banner find (a VALUABLE button!), but probably won't make banner because it isn't glittery. I am nominating it anyhow, and I hope it appears up top. A Jackson button is on my wish list down here!

Congrats!!
