Woooo hoooo !! I got one !! A big old fat, chunky, full size, dated piece of eight cob !! Took 5 hunts after the hurricane to get a cob. Only been out of the sand for an hour. Beautiful low tide hunt at the hurricane hole, wasn't there 45 minutes before I got the cob. Found another strap keeper from the wreck too. What a great morning. photo-676.JPG

Im almost certain this coin will clean up incredibly well as it is a full size piece with a bold strike. Pretty sure its dated 1732, and was pulled from high ground by the hurricane. I found it in ankle deep water at mid tide. Woo hooo !! Got to clean the old girl up. Friday the 13 th was pretty darn lucky for me so far. Nice odd shaped piece. Looks like it came from the middle of the bar !!

I keep looking at it and I love the ingot shape to your Cob. Killer piece and no apparent clipping.

I'm going to put a Banner vote in on that one.

BTW did you get a weight on it?

Steve I havnt weighed it yet but its got to be hovering around the 27 gram mark. Although its a strange shape its size and mass are right in line with other eights ive found. Ill weigh it at the neighbors tonight. Just got the ok from the wife so im outta here. Could be more.

That's an awesome find!! :icon_thumleft:

It cleaned up beautifully, what are you using to clean it?

Do you know if any other Spanish fleet treasure was found after Irma?

Brian

I'd love to hear the complete story about how this coin came to be lost and ended up where it did. Truly an amazing find, and the hurricane exposing it only adds to its incredible provenance. Hope you can turn up a few more.

Hey bill you can search for" 1733 treasure fleet disaster " and the whole story will pop up. This coin comes from one of several camps that were made after the hurricane destroyed the entire treasure fleet, and the survivors made there way ashore. Its a great story you'll love it !!

I just weighed it and it aint so big and nasty anymore. It only weighed 24.7 it should be like my others between 26.1-26.7 So perhaps the rectangle shape is from a nice clip ?? Clipped 8 is fine with me and makes good sense for the shape ?? What do you guys think ??

I only used boiling water baking soda and tinfoil. Im not sure about people finding anything besides me but if im right others have and more treasure will be found. Conditions are incredible except water vis. Only been a few clear days since the hurricane. Happy hunting!
