a couple mornings ago i took a walk after doing my chores
i have walked this area before so i think the heavy rains must have made this wash and expose the corner of the piece
when i reached down to look i discovered the best scoria game piece i have ever found
the last image shows the plain back side which reminds me of one of those erasers i used in grade school
getting the 7 plus inches of rain we recently had along with cool weather gave my tomatoes the early blight, which sucks,
but i don't think i would change it if i could

hey pick, it is made from scoria
this is a soft stone like a super hard chalk, you can use it to write on sidewalks the same way as the (softer) sidewalk chalk
and always red in color
they make bricks out of it in hebron, at a brick factory in west central ND
it is prolific in western north dakota
i have a couple more game pieces made from scoria but they are not that nice, if you want me to post them i will
this scoria is so soft that it is almost always broke when a person is lucky enuff to find something made from it

Here's a pic from one of my books of a game piece made of clinker, or what North Dakotans call "scoria," a misnomer of volcanic origin. Real scoria is of volcanic origin. The clinker that is common thoughout western ND is formed when burning lignite coal seams bake the overlying rocks such as sandstone and claystone. Everyone in ND (except maybe geologists) calls it scoria though!
