I dug up a monster! But what kind?

Found about 2' underground in a 17th to mid 18th century trash pit. The dime is shown for comparison. Either a tooth or claw, either way, a BIG critter! Any ideas what kind of creature used to own this?




Possibly a chompasaurus!

I have now calmed down a bit from today's dig, and looked online. Since it is so BIG, I looked especially a bears, cougars and pigs. I think it's a cougar tooth. Not some kind of claw.

They were around here 350 years ago, and now they're back. There goes the neighborhood.

Either way, I'll take it. Not something you find everyday. I make a decent pet owner, don't think I'd make a good vet. I may have to take it there.

Actually...this was from the same, now expanded hole that made the banner. The bones we encountered previously were relatively short and thick.

I think your first guess is right. Definitely a chompasaurus!

Chompasaurus for sure. Probably bear or cougar. The curve makes me think cougar, but it is big, so bear? Either way in 1675 they were still around here. That's the age of the site.

It looks like a carnivore canine tooth to me. I too thought beaver initially, as I have trapped many of those critters, but the profile is not correct for a beaver.

No, it's way too big for a beaver. Doesn't look right for a dog either, so wolf would probably be out too. If we can't figure it out here I'll probably take it to the vet this week (or compare it to my friend's HUGE black lab) for comparison.

It looks like a tusk from a hog, one from the top that whets against the lower one to keep it sharp. But that's just me looking at it in a picture and several hundred miles away...d2

It looks like a worn horse incisor. The white cone shaped part in the picture with the dime is the root.
