I found a 1906 Reunion pin/cuff link from a retired Civil War soldier. This is a prized possession for me. I’m so so happy:))) IMG_2056.webpIMG_2060.webpIMG_2061.webp

Any suggestions on cleaning it or should I leave it alone?

Thanks Ken saved and safe. You’re gonna have to show me how to water hunt this summer. Have you ever done old Lincoln Beach?

I hit Lincoln beach a few times. It's really trashy.... Mostly I got modern change and bullets over on the side closer to the airport. A couple mercury dimes came out of one of the trails though. A lot of the change was just laying on top of the sand where the wind had blown. The rest of the place away from the beach is so overgrown that it's near impossible to swing a coil and there's a thick layer of cans and bottle caps over the whole place it seems. If you have a machine that will work on salt water beaches you might do better than I did at the water's edge. The briny water made my machine pretty much useless out there in the wet sand areas

One nice thing... If you go out there in the summer and take a crab trap with you and set it in by the rock breakwaters, you can catch some lunch while you detect....

I don't know if Ponchartrain beach is open to the public again yet, but I have pulled some jewelry and a few old coins out of there when it was. One big thing out there... When you're facing the water, the right hand side of the beach is just full of little rusty chunks of iron from an old sheet pile wall there that's been rusting away for who knows how long...

If you can get out in the water I'll bet you'd do ok because the erosion and storm surges have pulled most of the original beach out into the lake now.

If you do any magnet fishing and want to find a lot of old guns that the sheriffs tossed in the water long ago I can point you to a good spot

I have a magnet as well. Lol I know that it’s a federal building now with security at a gate so I assumed it was no trespassing so I thought you would need a kayak to paddle around to where the beach was I had it planned out park my truck on the side and paddle to the water at the beach. Also worried about clarity of the water. The Max is supposed to work good in salt/brackish water I have a scoop but have a shovel handle on it and it heavy as hell I need advice. Do you use a wet suit? When was the last time you went? Did they allow you in the gates? I’ll spend the money to get serious about water hunting I just do want to spend unnecessary when I don’t know what I’m doing. My only experience in beach hunting in Mississippi and I’ve NEVER had any luck. IMG_2068.webpIMG_2069.webp

The beach is controlled by UNO last I knew. They shut it all down to the public a few years ago because people were diving off the rocks into shallow water and a couple of them drowned. I haven't been out there to the actual beach since that, but I have hunted the big grassy area on the city side of the levee and found a nice big silver chain there the last time. I never bothered with a wet suit there because it's so shallow for so far out that the water gets nice and warm in the summer. Clarity can be a problem though, especially if the river gets too high and they open the spillway, but it's never particularly good visibility. You should be ok with a scoop in there though, and I think if I was going to water hunt, I'd make a floating screen and keep it tied to me just to pour the scoop in because you'll get a lot of mussel shells in every scoop and that would make it easier to sort.

Lincoln Beach is pretty much the same conditions in the water. Access though is a lot different. We used to park at a corner store there and you have to go up and over the levee and across the tracks at the airport end of the beach. The only problem last time was that store had burned down and we just didn't feel good about leaving the cars there unattended any more since there were no cameras and no one keeping the bums and thieves away. It's a shame because I wanted to go all the way to the end of Haynes Rd there and try my luck where the old fishing camps used to be.

There's another pretty popular swimming beach at the end of the Industrial Canal that I always wanted to hit but never had a chance to. Mainly it was just always crowded in the summer and I just didn't want to deal with all the kids. I found a pretty nice watch there though right on the surface. It's the same deal, stays shallow a good way out.

Great job on saving cultural heritage.

Wow amazing hows that max treating ya in all metal mode my friend??????

Awesome find Truth!! You have been finding some cool stuff lately. Good start to the year

Very nice find!

Congrats on a very cool find. If I found it I'd soak it in distilled water only, no brushing, enamel comes off very easy.

amazing you deserve it
