I found this Civil War Bayonet yesterday in a possible CW Campsite in a wooded area!

My son (Crabstang44) has managed to get me out in the Civil War Era Fields in Craven County,NC for the past couple of weeks and yesterday I had a hunch about a small wooded area adjacent to one of the Farm Fields so I went in and look at what I found! This is the first Civil War Bayonet I have ever found and I am very pleased! While trecking thru the wooded area I noticed some areas that looked like dugouts with mounds so I started searching these areas when I had a massive signal on my White's VX3....It was showing near a foot deep so I tried digging a large plug but there was a large root crossing right in the middle about 6" deep! I finally managed to remove the root with my White's 5" Shovel and about 4" under that was this corroded chunk of Iron that I recognized but didn't at first believe! After getting my composure...I realized what I had finally found and it was evident that I had found my first Civil War Bayonet that looks to me to be for the Springfield Musket! It appears to have about 4" of the tip broken off and after close examination we could see it was an old break and we are aware that during the War there was a small battle in this area...Needless to say....my son was surprised as well and no doubt we will be going there again to continue the search!..............01/17/19 Update....went back today for a couple hours and my son and I found 2 Civil War Era Shovel remains, 1/3 chunk of Cannon Ball & a separate Fuse plus....tons of iron nails and misc. iron pieces...We also found a small dug out pond on this site about 10' diameter that was definitely dug by shovel probably for watering horses & cattle! I added a pic of the Bayonet when we got it to vehicle yesterday (before cleaning) and I will take pics of the wooded site with pond etc. on my next trip..........................................................................................
01/18/19 Update......Crabstang44 and myself found more stuff today at our newly found Civil War Site so enjoy these added pics showing more....

That's a terrific find! We don't see those posted here very often.
Thank You very much! I enjoyed the blurb! Please check back later for added updates as we have more trips planned! Ken
Here is a blurb from an 1899 book to give your relic some perspective:

Looks like this Civil War site is gonna be on my back burner for a little while as I have a full blown case of the Flu and it ain't good! I hate for this to be my last dig but my health is already not good anymore! I will try to get over this illness and get back to digging this site again because I could see great potential there for some time! If I am unable to get back out there then I will turn it over to my son! Thanks for all of you diggers out there for commenting on my Bayonet....Ken

Hope you feel better ASAP , I just went through a mild flu , at times I did not even want to lift my arms let alone a shovel .

I thought I was better & went for a 4 hour hunt where I sweat but when a stiff wind blew I froze , that set me back another week +.
The relics will wait , I don't see your Son "mud bugging "in without you.
God Bless
