I found this on a remote beach in the Caribean

I found this on a remote beach in the Caribean with a metal detector. My first time. It's about 5ft length, 1.5 width, 1.5 deep. Couldn't get it out due to time constraints but I will be going back with proper digging and wench equipment. Its made of iron or steel. looks quite old. Does anyone know what this might be? To me, it looks like a treasure chest. Maybe wishful thinking.

Looks like industrial junk to me. You know, old wharf rigging, or ship part, or dredging scaffold, or .......... whatever.

Calisdad may be right. Look like the remains of iron bands that held a chest or some container together. Regardless........still worth digging it all the way out to see what it is!

Well, judging from the shadows, I would say it was app. 1 o'clock. There is no way you could have kept me from digging beside it to determine what it was. Is that a Bounty Hunter? Frank

Welcome to Tnet! Let us know what you find when you get it out of the ground. The metal parts look too big, wide, and heavy to be part of a wooden chest. Maybe an industrial bin of some sort.

Unfortunately I was being bitten alive and wound up with 600 sand flee and mosquito bites, didn't have the right tools and had to leave. Ill update you soon. Trying to go back and see. I agree the straps seem wide for a chest but they were all hand made so you never know how someone designed it back then. Either way, the curiosity is killing me so I have to know soon

It's not a treasure chest simply because of size. 5 feet long? You fill that with silver and the weight will be in the tons. More than double if you put gold in it. You couldn't get enough people around that to lift it, and it would never be able to be loaded into a skiff to take to shore.

Yeah, you're most likely right. But I have the bug in me now. Lol. And I have to know for sure. It's actually probably about 4 ft by 1.25 wide and maybe 1.5 feet deep . But I gotta know. It's driving me nuts. Ha

May not be a "treasure chest" but some sort of shipping container, sea chest or a wardrobe trunk. Guess we will see once the digging is all done!

Hopefully it'll still be there. It's been there at least 50 years or maybe even 100-200 or more years? Who knows. But if figured if its been there that long, it should still be there in a couple weeks.

We started digging around 3:30. Because we missed the cut off to return our snorkeling gear at 3. This I'm sure of. So we found that close to 4-4:15. Dug for almost an hour. Got dark around 6

That item has got my curiosity going.....you don't mention which Island but Jamaica for one does a lot of jerk cooking so it could be some sort of oversized grill for cooking communal/party type meals.....seem to recall they'd actually bury the food and let the cinders cook the meat for a day or 2.

Regards + HH

Ha ha, nice try. I left the island out for a reason. Lol. But to be fair, it could be Jamaica, but then, it might not be.
