I searched a former homesite in the woods on Sunday. Two hours passed with no keepers, so I hit the snooze alarm on my phone to give myself a little more time. A few minutes later, I got an iffy high tone that turned out to be an 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent. The obverse looked good right out of the hole, though the reverse looks poor. I used Andres pencils on the reverse, but the dirt and corrosion is stubborn. I also found a brass thimble a few minutes after the coin, then had to head home. Thanks and good luck out there.

If it a small fraction you got some good coin coming your way it is a large date

Wow. I had no idea a Draped Bust cent could be so valuable. I am not sure I have a large date, and I definitely can’t determine if I have a small fraction. Thanks for the info… I can at least dream I hit it big😀.

Thanks! Are you thinking it is a large date? I think the numbers are very close to Lady Liberty, which could mean a large date, but the font did not look quite right to me. I don’t know if I can make any assessment of the fraction.

Did a little more research. Based on this photo, I believe my coin is the common small date variety versus the rare large date version. The giveaway is the font for the date. That said, I guess I won’t be trading the coin for a new truck 😀.

You did FANTASTIC Thanks for sharing with us :)

Don't you love when that happens. Congrats

Definitely a small date, but I would love to dig one like that any day!!!

It's still worth way more than a penny, at least $50 and up to $100, and possibly more to the right buyer.
