We need your help resolving an issue with your PayPal account.

What's the problem?

Before we can offer you certain products and services, federal regulations
require that we collect specific information to verify your identity. This
information includes your name, address, date of birth, and National Tax ID
or Social Security Number. We haven't been able to verify your identity
using the information you provided, so we need some additional
documentation from you.

Until this issue is resolved, you'll be able to log in to your PayPal
account but you might not be able to add money to it or use some of your
account features.

How can you help?

It's usually pretty easy to take care of things like this. Most of the
time, we just need a little more information about your account or latest
transactions.

Please log in to your account and go to the Resolution Center to find out
what you need to do.

Is this a SCAM ?

If this (above) was an e-mail you received - NEVER and I mean NEVER hit any link or download any attachment from PayPal or any of your banks. Always go directly to the site (i.e., PayPal, etc.) and try logging in. 99.9% of the time the message is scam and wants you to download a file so it can infect your computer or have you go to a link and collect the data. Again, when in doubt - open up another browser or window and log into the site in question.

I'd be very leering of a letter like that....check the url at the top of the page and see if in fact it's a paypal message or some scam artist.

Was this an email or a letter you got in the mail? His title says letter and when I read that I assumed it was a letter he got in the mail. Regardless don't send them anything. It's most likely a scam.

It is an obvious scam.
There is no such thing as a "National Tax ID". That's a red flag right there!!

There is an SSN (for individuals) or a TIN (for companies). TIN = "Taxpayer Identification Number", in case you didn't know.
Also, there is no compelling reason for PayPal to have your SSN or TIN (though it is not technically illegal for them to ask).
That is, if this were really PayPal, which I very seriously doubt is the case. -- unless maybe you have a PayPal credit card or something like that.
Sorry -- not terribly familiar with PayPal's various consumer credit products, if any. ?

The only way a "snail-mail" SCAM like this would function is if the letter provides a spoofed URL, phone or other contact info that does not actually go to PayPal.
If this were sent via email, the scammer would likely provide a link for you to click, which goes somewhere other than PayPal (though it might look like the real PayPal).
Alternatively, they could have hijaacked your browser to redirect responses intended for PayPal to some other destination.

The funny part in all of this (as much as I hate scam artists) is that PayPal probably already knows your SSN.
They probably also know your height, hair color, sexual orientation, and when you last ate a chocolate ice cream cone.
I wouldn't put it past them...

I really question how much privacy remains in this day and age!!

You can move your mouse over the link (in the e-mail) and see the address - it is also a bad move to hit the link and then check out the URL at the top - by then the scammer knows he (or she) has a live PayPal user. The bottom line - I sincerely hope their is a special place in hell for scammers.

I know PayPal has been trying to get social security numbers for all users. I believe many older accounts were not required to provide this number to PayPal. Now they are getting serious to require it, updating their records.

As others have said, be careful of scams though.

I had to "verify my identity" a couple years ago when I added another account. Just make sure that anything you do is done directly from the paypal site and you won't have any problems.

Scam. They won't ask for that info. Open your E-mail but do not click on any links. Forward the E-mail to [email protected] and in a few days, you will receive a reply telling you if it was a scam or not. Believe me, this one's definitely a scam. I know I was a bit late posting, but I thought others could use the link. Have a safe browsing day!

I just got one yesterday saying an outside source Was trying to gain access to your PayPal account we have locked your account to protect it please click on this link to change your password. And follow the steps from there. Thank you and have a good day!

Went to PayPal and there's nothing wrong with it. It was a scam too.

Even with people calling I always tell him if IOU money you should have my address on file. send me a bill with your return address and I'll send a check, thank you have a good day hang up on them. I never get a bill in the mail. All scams.
