I hit the Trifecta today &...Spanish Silver greetings from NH!

Hi all,
It's been a very long time since I got out and did some detecting. Today I went to a property that we hunted twice this year. I arrived around noon time and knocked on Joe's door. As a thank you for letting my partner and I hunt his property I gave him a nice hand painted glass xmas ornament that I painted. I will say that doing a good deed comes back to you and here is why.

My first signal about 1 minute into my hunt was a spanish silver (still don't know what it is...) My second target was a pretty nice King George ll copper!!! This piece of the field was obviously never hunted. I found a crotal bell about 9" deep and was psyched about that. Well to make a long story short I found two more before my day was done. My take for 3.5 hours of hunting was:

2 silver thimbles
3 crotal bells (the two that are alike I have never seen that style, not sure of age)
7 buttons
1 King George ll copper hapenny
1 Spanish Silver
2 wheaties
1 1946 rosie

Thanks for looking and I am very pleased with the Spanish Silver. Does anyone know what it is? I think I see 17-- on it for a date?

Ed-

Re: I hit the Trifecta today &...Spanish Silver greetings from NH!

Without a doubt a good hunt for you. With a great mixture of relics and coins, you could not ask for a better time out swinging the detector.

Your Spanish coin, well, it is a Spanish coin and not Spanish American,(most spanish silver found by detectorist is Spanish American pieces) the Pistareens were actually debased by 20% from their Spanish American counterparts, in other words, a Pistareen was not worth as much as a Spanish American 2 Reales.

Most Colonial Spanish coins found in USA are by far made in either Mexico, Central America, or South America. Your coin is from Spain.

I reread a bit of an article on Spanish coins, and always learn something new each time, and your coin is not a Pistareen, but 1/2 of a Pistareen, othewise known as a Cross One Reales. A Pistareen is a 2 Reales, a 1 Real is 1/2 Pistareen, and a Half Real is 1/4 Pistareen.

As far as a date goes on your coin,(Phillip V) I believe it is 173_? According to the article I read, 1717-1721 are by far the most common years and the other years minted are 1722-1727; and 1730, 1733, and 1736-1738. So it is one of those dates.

Here is an excellent article to learn more about Spanish coins, especially the Pistareens.

Hi everyone,

I thank you all for your kind words and for the information that you have given to me. This is the best outing that I have had in years. Any single find from yesterday's hunt would have made my day.

I never heard of a Pistareen. Thank you Buckle Boy for that information.

Thank you Don for all the information on the Pistareens. I can't wait to sit down and digest it all.

Chris, this was a great day. I know how you feel about the coppers (same as me) ;D

Civilman, I can't get a date yet but just knowing George ll gives us a good range of dates. It really has no corrosion but just enough wear to make the date almost unreadable. My son says it looks like 173.. or 175.. which would line up right for a George ll.

Thank you again to everyone on this forum. I really enjoy posting when lucky enough 8) and seeing all your finds.
