I Need Information on This Civil War Lock

[Dman]

This Civil War lock was found in a Civil War camp close to LaGrange, TN. It looks like a 1858 canteen. It is about 4 inches long. It has U.S. on both sides of the lock. I have never seen one like it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Nice find!!! Never seen one those anywhere in 19 or so years of digging.. let us know what you find out about it. I did dig a lock from a housesite that had a Confederate camp around it.. while it still had dirt on it it look like it has a Confederate flag on the front.. but it was just close to it in style.. I've dug a few more like since..

Thanks Montana Jim for the information. It is called a story lock. One person emailed me and said it was given to Civil War veterans at a reunion. It was made to look like an 1858 canteen. Thanks again.
