I was told not to leave Treasure Magazines in Doctor's office.

I have been leaving Treasure magazines in my doctor's office for years knowing some people would enjoy the change of subject matter from all the womens mags they have. My thinking was that I enjoy the hobby and knew others would too. My doctor enjoys them so I have permission.

I get a note on my cars windshield telling me it is wrong to promote the hobby as there are, "Too many out there now finding all the stuff.",

My question is, is this the thinking by most people that there is to much competion out in the field?

I agree, it sounds like someone resents you leaving the magazines because of the competition it may cause.

I'm not too worried about it myself, as I see a lot of people walking the beach swinging the coil in a 100-120 degree arc, 4 inches off the ground and speed walking............

The fellow is resentful that he has competition; a very insecure old fart. What I find so entertaining is that people who have many children complain about long lines at the grocery, traffic, COMPETITION on beaches etc.....

They have no right to complain about other people because they themselves produced so many resource depleters and competition. It is people like me (childfee) who should be complaining.

I don't want more competition I will tell ya that much!! I wont promote it unless I am gettin paid to do it or if my family wants to get involved.

Sandman, I would absolutely LOVE to find some treasure hunting magazines in my doctors' offices. I am sick of seeing People, O!, Car & Driver, and Vogue.

If you seek to be unique in a hobby, take up Russian Roulette - very little competition.

I didn't know that MD'ing was an exclusive club, dummy me, I thought it was to have fun with other people who enjoy finding things under the ground. Sounds to me, you have someone that is trying to use it for profit and doesn't want any competition from, dare I say, outsiders?

I'll say something unpopular even though I'm an avid MDer, and maybe this isn't the right thread. That is, I'll admit that MDing can be in conflict with archaelogical research, any maybe that was part of the objection noted. It's probably true that when we hunt a historic area, digging up stuff messes up the archaelogical record for the area and some knowledge is lost forever. I wish it weren't so, but that's probably the case. I'm also an avid gold miner, and I'll admit that in my zeal I tend to lose concern for the environment. And deep down I feel that archaelogical knowledge and the environment are fundamentally more important than my need to entertain myself with my passions, although I doubt I'll stop doing what I do, the urge is so strong. The best I can do is try to be increasingly be mindful of the more important values that I may be in conflict with, and try to develop practices that minimize any irreversible harm. I'm basically way too lazy, but I would like to get to a point where I could document any historic finds I recover, such as old coins, relics, etc. -- the precise location, depth, ID, etc. If everyone did that, some archaelogical knowledge could be retained, particularly the statistical dispersion patterns and approximate strata. Sure, a pipe dream, but maybe we could lessen the conflict with archaelogists, who could very well possibly shut us down someday if we're not careful.

A true treasure hunter does not reveal his locations...

Peronally I would not want to promote the hobby too much...maybe some to my family or close friends..but not just to any joe blow on the street.

I don't .... I never show or tell of my finds.........Not even on treasurenet.....or to any body except my wife & children...........

in the past to make it worth doing.

I think that most of the people that say they have no problem with competition, are fortunate to not be facing any competition.
The less competition the better I would say. Location makes a difference. In lower populated regions, you might not have hardly anybody detecting it. The saying that nobody gets it all, is true. However, several machines in a small area takes the fun out of it. Also people that act like they don't want to make a good find are not being honest.In some locals you are limited to a few small public places. Your potential is quickly diminished sometimes. Let's be honest. Would you rather hunt a spot that 8 machines just went through, or a area that has been off limits for 100 years?


Having said that, I am not greedy and will help anybody with the best honest advice I can!

I don't see a problem with the magazines though, that is kinda over the top. I would read it.

I do scratch my head though when people brag and post every find and then complain the beach is crowded with other Mders,

Do any of you hunt? I don't enjoy going into the woods and seeing a hunter in every tree. So that makes me greedy?

I'm new to detecting. I have only ever seen one other person detecting here locally, but I KNOW this little town has been hutned to death. What I have found that I enjoy, maybe most of all, is what I have learned about my home town. Also the way I "see" things differently as I drive down the old streets. I actually think I am in a good position for this hobby. Being a cable installer in a pretty historic little town not only do I drive EVERYWHERE but I'm in peoples homes. Eventually I'm gonna find the right house with the right people.....Sure you can detect out by that old barn.......Sounds to me like this guy or girl is just too damned lazy. If all you hunt is the local park, of course your gonna be concerned when new guys show up. To me the fun has been the hunt. I've done ALOT more research than detecting so far and loving it. Only been out a couple times with the detector but spent many hours reading over the last year. LOL.

While it is true that I have been detecting for only 1 year, I also have seen only 3 others detecting.
I don't think the hobby is overcrowded.
IMO you are doing a good thing letting folks know about the hobby.
I can see the person who compared it to animal hunting.
While I would not want to share the same woods with a lot of other hunters,
that does not mean I would not want any other hunters.
There is enough earth to share.
When I go MD'ing with my son we go over the same areas.
Sometimes I get something he missed and sometimes the other way.
We all should promote our hobby if only to show that it is not a bad thing.
Fill in your holes, make it look like no one has been there.
That's what I see in all publications. This is good.

I drive all over this country and over the years I think I've spotted maybe 1 or 2 people detecting old sites along the road. The big beaches get their share of action but the sand sweepers get most of the loot.
