I was told not to leave Treasure Magazines in Doctor's office.

I have been leaving Treasure magazines in my doctor's office for years knowing some people would enjoy the change of subject matter from all the womens mags they have. My thinking was that I enjoy the hobby and knew others would too. My doctor enjoys them so I have permission.

I get a note on my cars windshield telling me it is wrong to promote the hobby as there are, "Too many out there now finding all the stuff.",

My question is, is this the thinking by most people that there is to much competion out in the field?

As I mentioned, My trip down to the Jersey coast, I did see 2 detectorist in one area but, the beach I hunted IBSP, you need a permit, (I mention this cause when I got my permit I asked how many thay had out and it was few) I was the only one I saw on that 11 mile stretch of beach detecting. And in town where I did see the 2, there is so much area you could have 80 folks and it wouldn't be crowed. So i say NO. There is room for many.

Also all my local parks up here its only been myself.

LOL Sounds like somone Dosn't feel they are finding
enough, & is getting a Bit Greedy.

My guess they got into the hobby reading the Mags you left in the office.
And now are worried somone else will too

Makes me wonder why they did not have the guts to tell you to your face. Somebody always trying to control somebdy else. Probably jealous, could be an enviromental issue by someone or they could just be mental. Sandman I would continue to do this because obviously you are helping promote this sport to more than 1 person that doesn't get it. If 1 kid takes up metal detecting and can drag his dad outside with him it far outweights the other inconsiderate person. Please continue leaving the magazines.

Sandman.....I would just keep leaving the Mag's ....But i would always be watching out the corner of my eye trying to guess who it was that left the note..............And i would agree with what...Jeff of pa....and...gametalman...had to say.........................

I once had a friend that wouldn't buy a treasure hunting magazine because he told me it would take away from his profit............ Yet he bought golf mags. and I know he never won any money golfing even agains't me, an I am still lousy..............

It has to be because we are having a chance at finding money and jewelry that it is tied to only a profit and not the fun of
"what's down there."

If you have occassion to confront this "person" (I'm biting my tongue, trying not to call him/her names), you might also tell them that for the price of a "video game for tv" parents could buy a detector for their kid and solve the growing EPIDEMIC of overweight kids in this country! TTC

Wow Sandman, we are probably the Least crowded amount of hobbyists out there. As a kid I remember reading about detecting at the barber shop in the old Saga magazines. Sounds like someone isn't finding his/her share of goodies... Whaaaaaa...

Hi Sandman,

Keep leaving the magazines. Unfortunately, this world does have a few selfish or self-serving individuals who wouldn't share a crumb with a pauper. For every such varmint, there are, no doubt, innumerable appreciative folks at the doctor's office delighted to see something different and interesting to read.

Competition? That makes me laugh. Other than a friend I encouraged into the hobby, I hardly ever run into another detectorist while actively detecting at homesites, parks and so forth. Infrequently, I've spotted a few here and there over the years, but not many. The beach does see more detecting; it's not unusual to see one or two water hunters at any given time on weekends, but it's a vast area that could easily accomodate many others without much notable impact. Besides, such areas are constantly replenished each summer.

Also with regard to competition, metal detecting at most sites is reminiscent of sportfishing. While nearly everyone can have an enjoyable outing and catch some commonplace fish, many of the big "catches" are hidden by trash masking, or are down deep... where only the more experienced operators will impact their numbers on a consistent basis. Good topic Sandman.

There are some weird people out there.
Was at a local beach in the Boston area. Got there at day break.
Another detectorist showed up at 5:30. He said to me "what are you doing on MY beach?" "I haven't seen you here before." "There's too many damn metal detector guys that take everything I should find." "And those F***** clubs. This is a hobby not a business. They come here 10 abreast and clean out the whole beach."

I countered likewise that I that you hobbyists take the food out of my mouth, I live on what I find. This seemed to tick him off. I ignored him and continued my hunting.

Ended up with a 18K pendant, 10K wedding band with diamonds, a sterling chain and pendant and about $8 in clad.

I am surprised that a doctor would allow these mags in his office knowing that getting outside and exercising in fresh air cures many ills, and will definately put a dent in his business. As far a competition, I feel it perfects our skills and form. Keep leaving those mags as long as you can, you are doing your fellow human beings beneficial service.

Hey Sandman, long as the doc says it ok..keep on doing it...notice thou when you go next time if the mags are gone..maybe this person is taking them too.. keep on leaving em... thats what I would do.

I have yet to find someone locally who wants to to a little detecting, so I hardly think the hobby is overcrowded, at least in my neck of the woods. I would welcome a fellow hobbyist. Ignore such narrow mindedness

I am also one that would like to read them if I seen them at my doc's office. I think it is great you are so thoughtful and so considerate of others to leave them there.

As far as the person that tagged your windshield, I hope he is reading this thread also for he to me he isn't a true MDer as we are to promote our sport. Thanks again for you and your kind gester
