I was recently given an interesting metal detecting find from adjacent to a 1715 fleet wreck to clean and conserve.
It is silver.. With no visible markings I could use some ideas as to what it came from.
A couple edges look to be cut to me I could be wrong but it gives me the impression of an ingot.. But the size and shape just doesn't seem right

This might be a stretch but the first thing I thought of was an oil lamp that has been through a rough time. Look at #5, could be a piece as it's curved and the circle that looks like some sort of thumb hole, appears to be twisted. Just my two cents. Great job on the conservation. Your getting pretty good at that

Gator, Since your post is about pieces of silver and not coins. Quick question. ( I don't want to be more precise on location.) Was this piece found within a mile of the museum, either north or south of it. The only reason that ask is that I found a piece of silver about the size of a thumb, last year after a storm and I couldn't figure out what it was.
Perhaps there are more in the area.

No where near the museum in Sebastian if that is the one your referring to

(Oldman)....
Short of posting a photo to look at my first guess going by probabilities is that it might be a piece of silver plate.
Those are actually fairly common and can look a lot like coins sometimes.

It does kind of resemble a Mideast style oil lamp, but really damaged. The old Roman with the ruler has a similar top hole. The hole on the clay Holy Land style Jerusalem lamp, is more off-center. Being silver, wonder if it could perhaps be a prayer lamp?

gator,
My first question after looking at your photos...are you Positive, that it is indeed silver?
From what i see from photos, I'm questioning that it is silver at all.

Well.. here's where I'm at... the crust seemed right ..its non ferrous ..it's definitely not lead and acid does nothing to it.
Lastly my silver cleaning cloth turns black and shines it right up.

Found close to 8 inches in low tide wet sand, upon closer inspection noticed the disc like indentations on the surface, since I have little to no knowledge concerning preservation nor identification I sent the photo and info to Gator, to get his opinion.

Looking at the photos only...looks like Zinc.
Have you put a strong magnet to it? Bleach test results?
Just from the after cleaning picture, looks more like zinc.
Hope you find out, take it pawn/jewelry shop and have them test it.
Good luck,
Trez

Zinc would be eaten away some, if left a couple days in a jar of half white vinegar and water mixture. It looks much different after cleaning, don't have a clue as to what it might be now.

How about a piece off of a satellite or spacecraft? Since the location was a shipwreck beach, don't think it is very likely to be anything else but from a ship.
